DINING ROOM: SPUTNIK CHANDELIER

Sputnik Chandelier |WHERE IS JUNE?

After living in our house almost 8 years, I finally replaced the dining room light which I have hated since the moment we moved in. {It was a perfectly nice light, jut not my style.}   I have been obsessed with the Jonathan Adler Sputnik Chandelier for a long, long time-but it will most likely never fit into my budget.  I began looking for alternatives and even asked for your help.  In the end I couldn’t give up my quest for a Sputnik and returned to my search determined to find one within my budget.  The inter-web gods were listening   I somehow stumbled upon Practical Props and my prayers were answered.  This lovely little lighting shop in Los Angeles, took my order over the phone, customized the drop for my space, and shipped my light to me in two days.    After a little research I found that most designers agree that lights should hang somewhere between 30″ and 36″ above the table.  I customized our light to hang 36″ above the table.  Our old light was incredibly low {See before picture below}.  The quality of the fixture is amazing and I truly love how it looks above our table.

Sputnik | WHERE IS JUNE?

The before and after pictures are a little more dramatic than in real life, thanks to a better camera and a super sunny day in the after shot.  However, you can see how the old light was heavy in appearance and very low to the table!  We are so very happy now.  With 18 individual bulbs the light is abundant from this fixture.  It is excellent that a dimmer switch was already installed.

So, now I just have a few finishing touches and this space will be complete.

After months of contemplation, I finally painted one of the walls and created a chalkboard wall.  I don’t have a good wide angle lens, so I am not able to capture the entire wall in a shot.  Well, now that it’s done – I need to write on it!  Below I edited the picture to show what it will hopefully look like when I get over myself and just write something.  {Yes, admittedly, I am a perfectionist and wish I was amazing at hand lettering.}  Stay tuned.

Lastly, I felt like I finally had enough pieces to hang a gallery wall.  I gathered five pieces and varied the frames and mats.  In the end, I stuck to a fairly monochromatic palette.  {It is almost impossible for me to take a picture without glare from the windows.  Sorry!}  In gray I have shown the size of pieces I would like to add in the future.  Also, I still think I need a piece of furniture below the art to anchor it in the room.  My husband is fighting this because the space is not very large.  These extremely slim console tables might be the answer.  Two, side-by-side, in white would be perfection!  I sketched their profile under the art work.  What do you think?

For each space in my house, I am constantly dreaming and scheming.  While there is still much to do, I am really happy how this small space is coming together.

CHATEAU DE GUDANES

chateau de gudanes

Whoa. Sometimes Facebook gives me gift on a Tuesday.  Yesterday, I spotted a link to photography blog which led me to Chateau de Gudanes.  Breathtaking to say the least, this site and blog documents the abandoned and neglected chateau, the couple who purchased it, and its restoration.

As for their plans for it?

“Our plans for the future keep changing and evolving, and they are only in their infancy, but we hope to welcome you as soon as possible. Ideally, to begin, a cafe and tours, even in its well worn state. By 2016 we would like to also offer you accommodation, a gift shop, and facilities for weddings, music festivals, local fêtes, workshops, conferences, seminars and courses.

Our aim is to tread lightly and gently – to preserve the atmosphere and authenticity of the Chateau and region as much as possible. She will be renovated but her rawness, wear and history will not be erased, but instead integrated. In keeping with this, we also plan to use energy efficient principles and sustainable refurbishment. This means up cycling and recycling as much as possible, including building materials, design features and decor.”

The pictures, even in its run-down state, are something out of a history book.  A beautiful one at that!  I am pretty sure I will be reading the blog updates regularly.  And the pictures on Instagram could brighten even the gloomiest of days!

I found this blog post particularly interesting.  {This post is just because.  Because I find it so interesting and I couldn’t help but share it!}

{JUNE LOVES} TED BAKER LONDON

ted baker london

Whoa!  I was buzzing through Nordstrom yesterday on a mission to get a pair of jeans to alterations.  I was literally stopped dead in my tracks by the most gorgeous leather jacket ever!  The exposed zippers, the fur collar, the delicious silk floral lining.  It is just too much!  The sleeves actually zip off and it converts to a vest-to make it even more amazing.  I had to try it on and snap a picture.  Ted Baker London is 100% outside my price point, but the clothes are magnificent.  I now have a major crush on this design house.

Sometimes a girl just has to dream.

Oh, and I literally couldn’t find THE jacket anywhere on the Nordstrom or Ted Baker London websites.  If you find it, let me know!  xo

DESTINATION: ITALIA

destination italia

It’s official and I am freaking out!  My husband and I are traveling to Italy.  It has been a long time dream and now I finally have a ticket in hand.  Skipping backpacking through Europe may be one of my only regrets in life.  While others were sleeping on overnight trains and exploring all of Europe, I went right back to school and began work on my Masters degree.  Responsible, but not very adventurous.  Now we are going for it!  2 weeks, just us, and the enchanting country of Italy.

Our rough itinerary is set.  Fly into Rome and spend time exploring.    Travel to Southern Italy (Calabria) to visit my grandfathers’ villages and meet cousins who still live in the area.  Both of my grandfathers immigrated to the United States from Italy in the early 1900’s.  From there, travel to the Amalfi Coast and explore Positano, Capri, and Pompeii.  How amazing, right?

That is where you all come in!  I need all of your tips.  What is the inside scoop to Rome?  What should I pack?  How should we get around once we are in Italy {train or car}?  Should we stay in Positano?  What is the best way to communicate with boys when we are gone?  Have any secrets to getting over jet lag?  Apartment or hotel?  Guide books you found most helpful?

Any and all recommendations are wanted!  May can’t get here fast enough.

Ciao!

EXPLORING SUN PEAKS ON SNOWSHOES

Lake McGillivray

I don’t downhill ski.  Funny thing is, my family takes a ski vacation every year.  What is a girl to do?  Snowshoe!  We just returned from a stay in Sun Peaks, Canada.  I spent our days there on my snowshoes taking in the sights!

I find my time snowshoeing relaxing and invigorating at the same time.  The views are often breathtaking.  The valleys are peaceful, yet the workout is strenuous.  This year I took on a challenge.  A 12km trek to a wilderness lake.  My friend Jeremy and I left the village at 10am and returned just after 4pm.  Yes, that is 6 hours on snowshoes.  Even with an hour break for lunch, it was still a hell of long walk in the snow.  We had heavy snow fall, then bright blue skies, and deep snow.  Our destination was McGillivary Lake.  Frozen over in the winter, we were able to walk onto the ice and snap some pictures.  We enjoyed a delicious warm lunch in the warming hut that our guide, Robert, packed for us.  We signed the Nordic log book and visited with the cross country skiers that were eating lunch as well.  Funny thing, they were all from the Seattle area.  Guess the snow is better in Canada!

I will admit the walk back was LONG and my left hip flexor was screaming.  By the end I was no longer chatting, but simply daydreaming of the beer that awaited me in the village.  Sore feet and muscles were certainly worth the awesome day we had on those advanced mountain trails!  The pictures don’t do this hike justice.

Lake McGillivary Canada

The rest of my trip was spent solo on shorter trails.  With my ear buds in and music pumping, I rarely saw another hiker.  I enjoyed the time alone.  And the views.  Man, I can’t get over the beauty of new snow and brilliant sunshine!  I feel so lucky to have found a sport to enjoy while my boys are making turns up on the mountain.  {A happy wife = a happy life.}

Sun Peaks on Snow Shoes

P.S.  We HIGHLY recommend Sun Peaks, Canada for a family ski vacation.  It has a wonderful village, tons of skiing, virtually no lift lines, and lovely people.  You truly can’t go wrong.  {Sun Peaks for life!}

Interested in the guided snowshoe tour to Lake McGillivary?  Book with Adventure Centre.  Robert was a fantastic guide!

THE ART OF {RE} ENTRY

Monday, February 24th, 2014

fresh tracks

After a 9+ hour drive home yesterday, we officially hit the ground running this morning!  Our school calendar grants us one week in mid-February to get away from it all.  While some choose warm vacations, my guys prefer the slopes this time of year. Our trip was fantastic {more on our adventures later this week} but the coming home is ALWAYS the hardest part.  I mean look at that blue sky and those fresh tracks!

I am still trying to master the art of {re} entry.  What did I do this morning?  I got the kids up a bit earlier than usual. This gave us more time to get all of the essential tasks complete.  I filled their tummies with gooey cinnamon rolls.  While vacation is over, it is nice to have one last decadent treat to ease back into normal life.  Lastly, I reassured Little Man that returning to school/work is hard for everyone.  To go from skiing all day with your buddies to sitting all day at a desk is a tough transition.  A quick kiss and a reminder to “BE GREAT” and they were out the car door.

It usually takes a few days for life to return to normal.  What are your tricks to easing back into real life?

your pinterest boards

You can read a lot about a person by looking at their boards on Pinterest.  I find this graphic so interesting and TRUE!  Pinterest boards tell a visual story about you as person.  Your interests, passions, projects and dreams are presented to the world through images.  Maybe that is why I love it so much.  What do my boards say about me?  I am passionate about cooking, inspired by color, interested in design, dreaming of a new kitchen, love being a girl, planning for a trip to Italy, and obsessed with neon lights.   Yep, pretty much!

Have you ever thought of Pinterest in such a personal way?  Now I want to edit all my boards’ cover pictures so they beautiful and inspiring.

KIM CARON DESIGNS

kim caron designs

Ever meet a girl and instantly know you could be friends?  I know you would feel this way if you met Kim Guillet.  She is the passionate, down to earth, creative force behind Kim Caron Designs.  Her unique, hand-made jewelry is gorgeous.  Her pieces range from statement rings to delicate necklaces and everything in between.  {I am personally in love with druzy quartz. It is just so darn dreamy.  Just look at that fabulous ring!}

I am trying something new.  Just for fun, I decided to ask Kim a few questions about her designs and her inspiration.  There is no better way to get to know someone!

When and why did you launch Kim Caron Designs?

I launched Kim Caron Designs last April.  My neighbor Karla talked me into having a trunk show at her house.  She has been such a supportive friend.

How did you get your start designing jewelry?

Over 20 years ago I was introduced to jewelry design- it was at Mercer Island High School. I had an awesome teacher, Laurie Hall, and I  took the class multiple times.  About 3 years ago I was admiring my friend Amy’s Jamie Joseph ring and realized I wanted to make something like that! I signed up for classes at BCC, Danica Design, and Pratt in Seattle to learn jewelry fabrication all over again.  I still take classes all the time. There is so much to learn- it’s  endless.

What inspires you when designing?

I find inspiration everywhere–from my friends, from the stones themselves, from looking outside at color combinations and of course from Pinterest!

Your studio is so charming.  What do you love about it?

I love my studio.  My husband Marin built it for me for our 15th anniversary.  I think he was also motivated to get his workbench back. I had taken it over in the garage.  For me time flies in the studio- I feel like I always have something new I want to try.

How do you name the pieces in your collection?

Every piece of jewelry is named after a little girl I know.  My nieces Gracie and Sadie gave me that idea.

It’s a Monday morning.  What jewelry are you wearing?

Right now I’m wearing the callie “hope” heart pendant necklace. 100% of proceeds from this necklace go to Ben Towne Foundation for Pediatric Cancer Research. I hope to sell tons of these!!! I know Ben’s mom from college and have been absolutely floored by her strength and determination.  I wanted to give 10% of all sales to a charity I believed strongly in. It was the perfect fit. Ben’s story is at bentownefoundation.org.  You will cry.

STACKED WOOD

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013

stacked wood

Call it my latest visual obsession, but I can not get enough of stacked wood!  I was first taken by the idea of stacking wood rounds {or split wood} in a fireplace.  It is genius for a non-working fireplace or one you don’t use regularly.  I love that it adds a natural element to a room.  The mismatched shapes of the wood make it just plain awesome.  How about wood stacked next the fireplace-floor to ceiling?  Again, genius.  Storing wood, actually used to build a fire, and using it as part of the room’s decor.  The possibilities are seemingly endless.  Wood stacked under consoles.  Wood stacked under benches.  Wood stacked under open counters.  Yes, yes, and yes!

We have a wood burning fireplace in our bedroom.  Oh, I know…how romantic.  And yep, we have never used it.  The little wheels in my head are spinning.  If I can pull out the hideously ugly insert, you better believe that stacked wood rounds are taking its place.

TAKE ME BACK {TO CHICAGO}

chicago love

I seriously fell in love with Chicago.  A direct, mid-morning flight from Seattle got us to the Windy City in time for cocktail hour.  We explored the city by foot, taxi, train, and boat!  We took the Blue Line into the city from the airport.  For $5 it was a total bargain and kicked off a weekend of adventure.  It was great to walk Chicago because it was totally flat!  I felt like we could walk for miles and miles-which we probably did!  I highly recommend the Architecture Boat Tour on the Chicago River.  The 90-minute tour provided excellent history and stories regarding the buildings, the architects, and the city itself!  My favorite building was the Chicago Tribune building [sadly, I don’t have a picture!].  The food was outstanding.  We ate late [since we were on rock star- I mean Pacific time].  Dining with a party of 8 can be a challenge, but we had excellent service and outstanding food!  One evening at a tapas bar we ordered the entire left side of the menu.  We were having so much fun, decisions were easy.  It was a luxury to travel with dear friends, dress up, dine out, stay up late, and have little [well, actually no] responsibilities.

We ate well, slept little and laughed heartily.  The deep dish pizza, 4am closing, and social media may have got the best of me-but the trip was fantastic.  I wasn’t fully recovered until Wednesday.  Thank you, thank you, thank you Chicago!  I will be back.

Stay::

Fairmont @ Millennium Park  Centrally located just a few blocks from the Chicago River and Michigan Avenue.  It was an easy walk to Millennium Park [home of The Bean] and The Art Institute of Chicago.

Eat::

Quartino  Delicious Italian.  So good.

Xoco  Mexican done right by Rick Bayless [none of us knew how to pronounce it….we were told it was “cho-co”].  Casual dining.  My favorite was the Guacamole Bar [add mix-ins] and fresh to order churros!

Giordano’s  Home to the famous stuffed pizza.  Death by cheese, but oh so right!  Can’t go wrong.  [They also offered gluten-free thin crust.]

The Gage  Great place to grab a drink and something to eat before the game.  I loved the interior.  Felt like old school, Chicago [what ever that is!].

Play::

Divvy Bikes  All over the city we saw racks and racks of awesome blue bikes.  It was a bike share program.  Too cool!

The Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise  Awesome.  You have to do it!

The Magnificent Mile  Every shop you could want!  Get your credit cards ready.
