HOW TO FAKE THE PERFECT FAMILY PICTURE

Monday, November 17th, 2014

a family picture

Let me tell you a short story:

The year was 2007.  We were about to celebrate Little Man’s first Christmas.  Somehow there was not one photo of all four of us shot during his first 11 months of life. Mind boggling!  So in desperation I took my camera to the tree lot with a set purpose of getting a family picture to use on our Christmas card.  We asked a stranger to snap the photo and at quick glance it looked great.  When I got home and loaded it onto the computer, my mouth dropped open.  Some yahoo decided it would be good fun to photo bomb my picture.  Oh, I was not pleased.  Pissed, actually!  And since I had not, at this point, released my need to have the “perfect” family picture, I just faked it!  You will see that in the picture I sent out I converted it to black and white and edited out the photo bomber.  Classic and perfect.

a family photo

If that had happened this year, I would have sent out the photo with the idiot in the background!  Yes, photo editing can produce the most perfect picture.  However, as timed has passed I much prefer to send photos that show my messy, chaotic, and fun-filled life.   I won’t be faking a perfect photo this year.  But, yes, I still had a to force a family picture to be taken.  Why is this so darn hard??

On the top of my list this week is to complete our holiday cards!  How about you?

My favorite online resources for photo cards:

Pear Tree Greetings, Minted, Tiny Prints, Shutterfly, Pinhole Press

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF DAY?

sleeping babes

We all of have extremely busy lives, for better or worse.  So it got me thinking.  What is your favorite moment during the day?   Maybe it is an early morning run or a mid-day coffee break by yourself.  For me, it’s the moments just before I tuck myself into bed.  I check in on my boys before I head to my room.  Pull up covers, take off glasses, place books on the floor, and turn out the lights.  I sneak a peck on the cheek and run my fingers through their hair.  And then I just look at them.

In those moments I can see all that is good in them.  There is no frustration or angst.   No homework to be done, no arguments about screen time, no practice to rush off to, no battle to wage.  My worries, that seem to live just beneath the surface, settle.  I got them through another day and they are safely sleeping.  They are wonderfully perfect.  I smile.

Do you feel the same about watching your kids sleep?

I really would love to know…..  What is your favorite time of the day?

PURPLE HAIR. DON’T CARE?

purple hair don't care

I have a hair appointment today.  This week I realized my hair was beyond the point of just having a bad hair day.  My go-to-look the past few weeks has been a wide brimmed hat.  I’ve decided after quite a few years of fairly long hair, it is time for a change.

Today I am heading in for a cut, but what I really want is pastel purple hair.  No, really.  Ever since Nicole Ritchie rocked a purple bob in early Spring, I cannot shake this unbelievable desire to have purple hair!  I was so damn straight laced in high school and college, I didn’t dare experiment with colored hair.  {Note to my 20 year-old self.  Loosen up, don’t take everything so seriously, and live a little.}  Do I dare go there at forty?  Could I say it?  Purple hair.  Don’t care.  Oh, I desperately want to say YES!

Could I, as brunette, even achieve this color? What would it take?  I also wonder if my skin tone would look washed out with this color.  I wore a platinum wig on Halloween and it looked dreadful.  Who can answer these very important questions for me?

What do you think?  Purple hair?

Any beauty risks you are thinking about taking?  Oh, please share!

HELLO NOVEMBER

hello november roundup

And just like that it is November.  The time of year in the Northwest when life is spent mostly indoors.  While it seems the retail world has skipped Thanksgiving all together, I wouldn’t want to miss it.  I love the colors, the scents and the calm before the storm.  Looking for ways to reuse those pumpkins that never got carved?  Setting a Thanksgiving table?

Here are few ideas {clockwise from top left}:

Pumpkins with succulents

Gold tip feather garland

A gorgeous tablescape

Buffet signs

Thanksgiving placemats

Also, in case you missed it, Where is June? was featured in a Good Housekeeping roundup on gray manicures. Unbelievable, right?  The post that just keeps on giving.

{JUNE LOVES} HUMANS OF NEW YORK

humans of new york

This is a totally quick share today.  If you are not reading Humans of New York you must start today.  TODAY!  Brandon Stanton snaps a photos and interviews folks on the streets of New York.  His questions are provocative, which elicit unexpected responses.  His posts often restore my faith in humanity and remind me to be thoughtful of strangers.  Everyone has a story.

This recent post had over one million likes on Facebook alone!  It might be the best one EVER!  The story below that goes with the selfie of Tom Hanks and a cabbie:

“So get this. I’m driving down Park Avenue one day and this guy waves for me, so I pull over and I ask him where he’s going. He tells me 74th street, and I tell him that’s too far for me, because my shift just ended, so he says ‘thanks anyway’ and walks away. But then I think about it, and I start feeling bad for the guy, cause hey— I got a conscience. So I call him back to the cab and tell him to hop in. And he gets in the car all excited, all animated, and he’s talking about all these things. But he’s got his cap pulled down way over his eyes, so I can’t see who it is. But pretty soon I start to recognize his voice. And when we get to a light, I turn to him, and I look him in the eye, and I scream: “WIIIIIIILLLSSSSSOOOOOOON!!!” And that really got him. He started laughing hard. He sees that I’ve got this Ferrari hat on, and a Ferrari shirt too, so he starts calling me ‘Mr. Ferrari.’ The whole ride, he keeps calling me ‘Mr. Ferrari.’ So after we get to his destination, we snap a quick photo, and he goes on his way. And I think that’s it. But that’s not it, cause get this. Over the next few weeks, I just happen to randomly pick up people that know him. People who have acted with him before, people who work with him. And every time, I tell them: ‘Tell Mr. Hanks that Mr. Ferrari says ‘hello.’” Every time I say that. Then one day I’m driving, and I get a text from one of the people that I’d driven, and it says: ‘Mr. Hanks wants to invite you to see his Broadway show.’ So I bring my lady to the show, and we get to go backstage and everything, and after the show, we’re waiting for him in his dressing room, and he walks in and screams: ‘Mr. Ferrari!’ Can you believe that story? And you wanna know the craziest thing? The name of his show was ‘Lucky Guy.’ How crazy is that? Cause that was me. A lucky guy!”

You really must follow him and read his posts in some way:

Follow his website, or Facebook page, or his Instagram account.

There are also two books for purchase!

LOU & GREY

Lou and Grey Roundup

OH, YES.  Totally stumbled upon Lou and Grey and I am smitten!  This sister shop of Loft is stocked with easy separates that scream laid-back cool.  The color palette is 100% neutral.  I know many of you will LOVE that.  I kind of fell hard for all of it.  I have been telling my girlfriends for a few years that I am in between shops these days.  While I am not sure I will ever be ready to wear “lady-like”, traditional styles, it is certainly not appropriate for me to be shopping in the juniors sections exclusively.  Lou and Grey seems like a great middle point!  What do you think?

A CREATIVE BUSINESS CARD

social print studio business cards

I recently went back to work part time.  Each week I will stepping in for teachers on a moment’s notice.  My hope is that they will like my work and want me to be a guest teacher {that is a really fancy way of saying substitute} for them in the future.  I wanted something I could leave with my contact information, but I didn’t want your basic humdrum business card.  No, I wanted something creative and memorable.

And along comes Printstagram.  You all know my absolute love for Instagram!  The lovely minds at Printstagram found a way to make business cards fun and unique.  These square {2 3/8″ x  2 3/8″} Contact Cards combine my love of images and my contact information.  For just $20- I chose five different images and received 60 cards in a matter of days.  They are printed on heavy card stock and the color quality is amazing.  I am giddy each time I get a chance to leave one of these little pieces of art on a teacher’s desk!

These contact cards are the perfect non-business card for creatives and small business owners.  Heck.  Putting on my housewife hat for a moment, these are excellent for those of us who stay at home, too.  Everyone needs a card from time to time!  These babies fit in the palm of your hand and are effective to boot!

{JUNE LOVES} TED BAKER LONDON

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

ted baker london

Whoa!  I was buzzing through Nordstrom yesterday on a mission to get a pair of jeans to alterations.  I was literally stopped dead in my tracks by the most gorgeous leather jacket ever!  The exposed zippers, the fur collar, the delicious silk floral lining.  It is just too much!  The sleeves actually zip off and it converts to a vest-to make it even more amazing.  I had to try it on and snap a picture.  Ted Baker London is 100% outside my price point, but the clothes are magnificent.  I now have a major crush on this design house.

Sometimes a girl just has to dream.

Oh, and I literally couldn’t find THE jacket anywhere on the Nordstrom or Ted Baker London websites.  If you find it, let me know!  xo

FINDING A SIGNATURE SCENT

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

signature scent

I have always thought it would be cool to have a signature scent.  Same perfume, everyday.  One that is simply-me.  However, I have never been able to settle on just one.  The thing is, I know when a perfume is right for me or not. {I bet you do too!}  So it got me to thinking.  What do the perfumes I like have in common?

It all has to do with notes.  Notes are descriptors of scents that can be sensed upon application of a perfume. Top notes you smell right away and evaporate quickly, middle notes appear anywhere from two minutes to one hour after application, and base notes evaporate slowly and linger.  Together they are the body of your perfume.   So, if I can find the notes that I most drawn to, then I can easily choose perfumes that I will love.

I did a little research on four perfumes I have worn over the last couple of years.  I am fascinated to find that they each shared a few common notes.  I have always described the perfumes I like as masculine and earthy.  I think I was correct.  The common notes are pepper, violet, bergamot (a small citrus fruit), vanilla, and woods and mosses.

These are the four perfumes and their perfume notes:

bottega veneta

joan voss

balenciaga

elizabeth and james

My all time favorite is Bottega Veneta.   I wonder if it is because it is complex and has many layered notes.

If you are interested in learning more about the notes in the perfumes you love, I highly suggest Fragrantica.  Simply type in a perfume and read about the base notes, middle notes, and top notes.  It also gives you suggestions of other perfumes you might like.  It has a wealth of information!  Who knew perfume could be so damn interesting??

I am eager to try:

Tom Ford | Black Orchid

Chanel | Coco Noir

Narciso Rodriguez for Her
