I {HEART} A GOOD COUNTY FAIR

Friday, August 16th, 2013

The end of August and the first weeks of September bring county fairs!  I have found memories going to the fair as a kid.  The rides and games, the “carnies”, animals, cowboys and the food!  In recent years, I have taken my boys to a small county fair in Eastern Washington over Labor Day and they love all the same things.  We always go over budget and eat way too much.  Somehow there is always room for an elephant ear!  {My love of anything with cinnamon sugar is not a secret.}

A county fair is a country girl’s runway.  It is a treat to see the western wear in full effect.  I am certainly not a country girl-but it sure is fun to play along.  I also have a growing obsession with ferris wheels and photography.  The vibrant colors of the cars, the sky, and clouds.  I need to take my camera along this year.

I will have this song on repeat as we drive to the fair:

What is your #1 favorite thing about a fair?

RASPBERRY FREEZER JAM

jam2

While I am a modern-day housewife, I have not added canning to my resume. [That is taking it to a higher level.]   However, I do love to make freezer jam.  It is so sweet and fresh!  We went on Sunday to our Farmer’s Market and bought fresh-from-the-farm raspberries.  I was able to make six- 8oz containers of Raspberry Freezer Jam in under an hour and that included 30 minutes of set time.  It takes just 3 ingredients, a bowl, a potato masher, and plastic freezer jars.  Really any one can do it and *most kids are eager to help.

Raspberry Freezer Jam

  • 1/2 flat of Raspberries [or 6 small baskets]
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 6 Tbs. Ball RealFruit Instant Pectin

1.  Crush berries one layer at a time with potato masher.

2.  Add sugar and pectin and stir for 3 minutes.

3.  Spoon jam into 6 freezer jars and let stand for 30 minutes

Enjoy now.  Refrigerate for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 1 year.

Use small-4oz glass mason jars to give this jam as gifts.  Be sure to remind the recipients that it must be stored in the refrigerator.   There is nothing better than giving away the sweetness of summer!

*Disclaimer:  While most kids would be eager to participate in making jam, the child pictured in this post was not.  Pictures are 100% staged.  He had absolutely no interest in participating.

SEND THEM {LOVE} AT CAMP

Where is June | Send them love at camp

A week away from home at summer camp is a brave thing to do.  So, the care package {or as Big W calls it- “care mail”} is a great way to send your kids a little love at camp.  As this is my second year to send care mail, I thought about it carefully before sending it off !

Here are the items my camper will be receiving mid-week:

Where is June | Send them love at camp

A white pillowcase for his cabin mates to sign with neon Sharpies.  It is the same pillow case I sent last year, so the new signatures will just be added on!  I love the idea of sending it every year.

Where is June | Send them love at camp

A deck of cards, an extra disposable camera, and a Dot to Dot game pad.  Hopefully this will add to the in-cabin entertainment.

Where is June | Send them love at camp

Temporary tattoos.  Each set is cut into individual tattoos and placed in a sealed bag. I sent along a washcloth so they could easily apply them.

Where is June | Send them love at camp

Electronic 20 questions game/20Q!  I sent the 8 ball last year and it was big hit!  Hope this one is just as popular.

Where is June | Send them love at camp

Contraband.  No food items allowed in care packages.  Candy isn’t food, right? Either way, it makes the boys happy.  {You have to break the rules sometimes!}

Ever send a care package?  What items did your kids love?

Also, the first care package I sent and a grown up press-on tattoo.

SUMMER LIP THERAPY

c700x700

It seems my lips have been needing a little extra TLC this summer.  I thought I would share the three products I have been using each day.   I am not one for lengthy beauty regimens, so these products pack a lot of punch with little to no effort.

1//  Sara Happ Lip Scrub –  I use the Peppermint scrub, but the Lemonade scrub sounds perfect for summer.  The tub is small but it lasts forever. I use just a little before I jump in the shower.  It helps exfoliate any dry skin and keeps my lips smooth.

2//  Laura Mercier HydraTint SPF 15–  I use the Crimson Tint, which is an orangey-red, throughout the day.  There are 6 tint colors to choose from.  It is a lip balm with sun protection, tint, and moisture all in one!  Throw it in your purse or beach bag and you are set.  Seriously love, LOVE this stuff!!

3// Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1– A classic.  I lather this on at night.  It helps moisturize after a long day in the sun!  [We use this year round in my house.  Great for super chapped lips in the winter, too.]

A FOOD CHALLENGE

green-grapes

My kids are obsessed with the snack shack at the pool.  Since we have been at the pool everyday, I decided to work their obsession to my advantage.  We have a standing agreement.  They may purchase candy if they take and pass my daily food challenge.  I have shared before that my kids don’t eat a large variety of foods.  The daily food challenge will hopefully broaden their horizons and their ability to try foods they don’t ordinarily eat.  It is working beautifully!  So far they have successfully met the challenge of eating green grapes, bananas, turkey, granola, and yogurt and pepperoni pizza.  Scary that these are food my kids wouldn’t eat, right?  However, they had decided these were foods they didn’t like and that was that!  There has been some disappointment and failed challenges.  They couldn’t stomach snap peas and wouldn’t even go near cucumbers.  No big deal, they miss the snack shack for a day.  Well, it’s no big deal to me.  I giggle because it is a huge deal to them.  I look forward to the next challenge!  And so do they.

What great ideas have you used to convince kids to try new foods?

The best thing about summer in the Northwest is that you FINALLY get to everything outside.  A highlight at our house is hosting outdoor movie nights!  With the addition of a sweet, new [enormous] inflatable screen, movie nights are better than ever!  Just add friends, blankets, and more than a few cords and it is a perfect summer evening.

THE FOURTH OF JULY + A SUMMER ANTHEM

Happy Fourth of July!  This usually marks the beginning of the Seattle summer.  However, this year the weather has been hot and sunny for days, so it is going to be an amazing holiday. I don’t usually wear red, white and blue or nautical stripes-but I loved this hat!  Great for a long day in the sun or on the boat. We are headed to a family party complete with a dunk tank, sack races, a cannonball contest, and family tug-of-war.  I predict a Team Thomas victory.  With my sweet hat, how could we lose?

Last minute panic on food?  No worries, I’ve got you covered.

P.S.  I have found my summer anthem.  Oh, my goodness…it is so great.  I dare you to listen to it and not smile!  Makes me want to wear cut offs, swim in a river, and take a long drive on a country road.  Windows down and the radio up!  Let’s cruise.

Where is June?
