TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO SEE THE MARTIAN

Tuesday, October 6th, 2015

martian-gallery2-gallery-image_0

My entire family saw The Martian this weekend and I have to say it might be one of the best movies I have ever seen!  More importantly, I am so happy my kids saw it.  Matt Damon describes the film as “a love letter to science”.  I whole-heartedly agree.  It also is a love letter to Mars, botany, computer programming, math, problem solving, perseverance, bravery, loyalty, and duct tape.  The characters in The Martian are flat out smart.  Like, crazy smart!  The women are strong leaders and team players.

The boys were at the edge of their seats for the entire movie.  I love that a block buster can inspire children to look at science and math in a completely different way.  Math and science could save your life.  The life lesson of “if at first you don’t succeed…..” was center stage and brought to life beautifully.  Yes, there were a few f-bombs.  {And yes, my children have heard the word before.}  Please don’t let that be a deal breaker.  Your family will be enthralled and inspired by this movie.  I can’t think of a better way to share a Saturday afternoon with your kids.

GOLDEN GLOBES 2015

what to watch

I do love watching the Golden Globes.  The pace is fast, with tons of awards. No fluff just the actors and the dresses.  Sienna Miller, Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon, and Lupita Nyong’o, and Naomi Watts looked fabulous.  I thought Tina Fey’s tux was awesome and Jane Froggatt’s braided updo was fantastic!  Maggie Gyllenhall’s acceptance speech was truth telling.  I am pretty sure Tina and Amy and I would be BFF’s if they lived in my neighborhood.  And it is confirmed that George Clooney is IN LOVE with his wife.  Final proof that brains and beauty will cast a magical spell.

I also came away with a list of programs and movies that I really want to watch.  The BIG winner, The Affair, was a total surprise in my opinion-beating out my favorites in several categories.  Transparent, produced by Amazon, seems unique and thought provoking.  And the movies of the year, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Boyhood.

Who do you think won big last night?  Did you add any shows or movies to your watch list?

WILD MOVIE PREMIER

Wild Premier

Yep!  Christmas comes early for me this week!  Wild, the movie, will hit theaters in Seattle on Friday! It opened in New York and Los Angles last week.  I have been waiting for over a year.  I posted enthusiastically  when I heard the amazing book Wild was being brought to the big screen with Reese Witherspoon as the lead.  Since then, I have followed Cheryl Strayed and Reese on social media.  Can I just say, I want to be the third wheel with this adorable pair?!?

The reviews for the movie have been amazing and there is Oscar buzz surrounding Reese’s portrayal of Cheryl.  A few things I find extraordinary about this film, is how it came to be and the friendship Reese and Cheryl share.  Cheryl sent Reese an advanced copy of Wild before it was even released and the project was born.  Reese Witherspoon decided to produce and star in the film.  Of course the road was not easy, but she was determined to tell the story accurately.  {This article tells the story perfectly!}  In the last 6 months, Reese and Cheryl constantly posted pictures as they have been together promoting Wild!  They share an authentic friendship.  Cheryl has been part of the movie every step of the way!  From advising on the movie, being on set during filming, starring in a cameo role, attending film festivals, speaking at press junkets, and getting red carpet ready for premiers.  I am not a Hollywood expert, but I doubt that happens very often!

#wild

I 100% adored every aspect of the book and I will wait impatiently until I can buy my movie ticket and settle in to enjoy this film!!  Are you going to see it?

CAN’T WAIT to see #wildmovie!

A MOVIE FOR ONE

My husband and I have never been a couple that goes to see movies in the theater.  We are happy to wait for them to come to DVD or stream them at home.  Thanks to social media, I have been following the film festivals that are taking place this fall.  Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival {#tiff} both featured Wild, which I am dying to see!!  But now there are few more that I am adding to my list.  I will add them to my Netflix queue, but I am thinking of revisiting my Movie for One idea.  Finding time for a great movie mid-week, sounds kind of dreamy, right?

Here are the films on my “see sooner than later” list:

The Hundred Foot Journey

The Good Lie

Men, Women, & Children

Are there others that should be on my list?

A FAVORITE MOVIE LINE

crazy-stupid-love-hannah-and-jacob

There are lines in movies that just stick with you.  Sometimes they are poetic or thought provoking.  Sometimes they are just laugh out loud funny!  My favorite line in Crazy, Stupid, Love. is during the scene when Emma Stone {Hannah} goes home with Ryan Gosling {Jacob} for the first time.

“Will you take your shirt off?  F#*k!  Seriously?  It’s like your Photoshopped!”

So good, right?  She said what everyone was thinking. I love that!  I wasn’t a huge Ryan Gosling fan before I saw this movie.  {I know!  All of you Notebook fans just audibly gasped.}  However, there is something about him.

Rumor has it that he is going to have a baby with Eva Mendez.  That might possibly be the best looking offspring, EVER!

What are your favorite movie lines?

Happy Wednesday.

{FRIDAY MATINEE} BAD WORDS

bad words

I have dropped out of numerous book clubs because I never seem to read the book and always feel guilty showing up for the discussion unprepared.  Who needs one more thing to feel guilty about?  However, I do love spending time with girlfriends.  So a friend and I decided we would start a movie club.  Once a month.  Friday matinée.  Right now it is a club of two, but membership has its privileges.  Seeing a matinée during the week is a decadent treat!  This month we saw American Hustle.  Oh, my lord.  I am sure you have all seen it, but if you haven’t…run don’t walk to your nearest theater.  The hair and costumes alone make it PURE entertainment.  Amy Adams was fantastic and Jennifer Lawrence plays crazy like no one else!

During the previews, we selected our movie for March.  Bad Words.  A spelling bee loser, played by Jason Bateman, sets out to exact revenge by finding a loophole and attempting to win as an adult.  Watch the trailer.  The humor is so offensive you can’t help but laugh out loud.  I love Jason Bateman and really can’t wait to see it.

Since it doesn’t come out until March, what shall we see in February?  Send me any tips on must-see movies!  Have a wonderful weekend.

{Warning:  This trailer is not PG.  Watch without children in the room}

PLAYING WITH THE BOYS

playing with the boys

I digress from holiday posts to discuss with you a vitally important topic.  Who is the hottest flyer in the Top Gun volleyball scene?  Oh, I know you know it.  I just watched Top Gun again over the weekend. You remember the players:  Maverick, Goose, Ice Man, & Slider.  I am pretty sure Goose is out of the running since the poor guy didn’t even get to take his shirt off.  So then we are left with three!  My choice?  Slider. Hello, beautiful.  Seriously, just look at him.

Need to refresh your memory?  For your viewing pleasure:

Now I ask you.  Who is hottest Naval Aviator in this scene?

{And, just as important, what happened to the actor that played Slider.}

#wild

Equals LOVE!  Reese Witherspoon started film production on Wild last weekOh. My. Goodness. The film adaptation of the book by Cheryl Strayed is headed to the big screen. When I read this book earlier this year {read post here}, I could not put it down. I told all of my friends to read it.  It is a testament to the human spirit and our ability to overcome.

Now it is going to be a movie and I am more than excited to hear Cheryl Strayed is an integral part of the filming.  She wrote on her Facebook page last week, “I spent the past couple of days on location in beautiful central Oregon with the WILD film cast and crew watching as they transform not only my book but an era of my life into a movie. It’s an extraordinary experience to see Reese Witherspoon dressed in the clothes I wore on the trail, her hair the same style and color and cut as mine then, with my beloved/loathed Monster on her back packed just the way I packed it. I’m humbled and awed and so excited for you to see the movie! Here’s a shot of me on set.”

Oh, this makes me want to see it even more!!

Have you read the book? What did you think?  Will you see this movie?

A MOVIE FOR ONE

Lately, I have been wanting to go to the movies.  I have been wanting to go all on my own.  There is something about grabbing some Milk Duds and going to a matinee that really appeals to me.  It wouldn’t be a lonely thing to do…you don’t talk to anyone during a movie, do you? I thought about it during the school year, when I have a bit of free time, but never did it.  Now the kids are with me all day [everyday] so I will have to wait.  Bummer too, because there a few movies I would really like to see.  Kings of Summer and The Way Way Back are quintessential coming-of-age movies.  The Bling Ring is just guilty pleasure and I like Sofia Coppola.

Have you ever been to the movies by yourself?  Do you think I will like it?

The best thing about summer in the Northwest is that you FINALLY get to everything outside.  A highlight at our house is hosting outdoor movie nights!  With the addition of a sweet, new [enormous] inflatable screen, movie nights are better than ever!  Just add friends, blankets, and more than a few cords and it is a perfect summer evening.
