SUMMER LIP THERAPY

July 10th, 2013

c700x700

It seems my lips have been needing a little extra TLC this summer.  I thought I would share the three products I have been using each day.   I am not one for lengthy beauty regimens, so these products pack a lot of punch with little to no effort.

1//  Sara Happ Lip Scrub –  I use the Peppermint scrub, but the Lemonade scrub sounds perfect for summer.  The tub is small but it lasts forever. I use just a little before I jump in the shower.  It helps exfoliate any dry skin and keeps my lips smooth.

2//  Laura Mercier HydraTint SPF 15–  I use the Crimson Tint, which is an orangey-red, throughout the day.  There are 6 tint colors to choose from.  It is a lip balm with sun protection, tint, and moisture all in one!  Throw it in your purse or beach bag and you are set.  Seriously love, LOVE this stuff!!

3// Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1– A classic.  I lather this on at night.  It helps moisturize after a long day in the sun!  [We use this year round in my house.  Great for super chapped lips in the winter, too.]

A FOOD CHALLENGE

July 9th, 2013

green-grapes

My kids are obsessed with the snack shack at the pool.  Since we have been at the pool everyday, I decided to work their obsession to my advantage.  We have a standing agreement.  They may purchase candy if they take and pass my daily food challenge.  I have shared before that my kids don’t eat a large variety of foods.  The daily food challenge will hopefully broaden their horizons and their ability to try foods they don’t ordinarily eat.  It is working beautifully!  So far they have successfully met the challenge of eating green grapes, bananas, turkey, granola, and yogurt and pepperoni pizza.  Scary that these are food my kids wouldn’t eat, right?  However, they had decided these were foods they didn’t like and that was that!  There has been some disappointment and failed challenges.  They couldn’t stomach snap peas and wouldn’t even go near cucumbers.  No big deal, they miss the snack shack for a day.  Well, it’s no big deal to me.  I giggle because it is a huge deal to them.  I look forward to the next challenge!  And so do they.

What great ideas have you used to convince kids to try new foods?

The best thing about summer in the Northwest is that you FINALLY get to everything outside.  A highlight at our house is hosting outdoor movie nights!  With the addition of a sweet, new [enormous] inflatable screen, movie nights are better than ever!  Just add friends, blankets, and more than a few cords and it is a perfect summer evening.

THE FOURTH OF JULY + A SUMMER ANTHEM

July 4th, 2013

DSC_0002

Happy Fourth of July!  This usually marks the beginning of the Seattle summer.  However, this year the weather has been hot and sunny for days, so it is going to be an amazing holiday. I don’t usually wear red, white and blue or nautical stripes-but I loved this hat!  Great for a long day in the sun or on the boat. We are headed to a family party complete with a dunk tank, sack races, a cannonball contest, and family tug-of-war.  I predict a Team Thomas victory.  With my sweet hat, how could we lose?

Last minute panic on food?  No worries, I’ve got you covered.

P.S.  I have found my summer anthem.  Oh, my goodness…it is so great.  I dare you to listen to it and not smile!  Makes me want to wear cut offs, swim in a river, and take a long drive on a country road.  Windows down and the radio up!  Let’s cruise.

SIMPLE PUMP+SEXY ANKLE STRAP

July 3rd, 2013

A simple pump with a sexy ankle strap.  Oh, how I love thee.  I don’t currently own a pair, but I seem to be pinning this style over and over and over again!  They are perfect for summer.  You could wear them with a flirty skirt or a pair of silk shorts.  I want to wear them with a pair of cut off jeans.  The perfect mix of glamor and edge.  The camouflage pair by Steve Madden [#3] are calling my name, but they are all equally awesome.

Which pair are your favorite?

{DAIRY FREE} STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE

July 2nd, 2013

My Little Man is a selective eater.  I can count the foods he eats on one hand.  That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it isn’t far off.  Thankfully, two of those foods are apples and crunchy carrots.  He also loves [LOVES] chocolate milk and milkshakes.  The problem is I am 99% sure he is lactose intolerant.  As one of his only sources of protein, not drinking milk is a big deal.  A friend of mine told me that Yami yogurt is lactose free.  Sure enough, the makers of Yami use Lactase, a natural enzyme, to remove lactose from the yogurt.  Brilliant!!  Except I can’t get him to eat the yogurt.  Knowing that he loves smoothies, I went stealth and created a fruit smoothie that is dairy free and delicious!!  [And this is why mothers should be considered superheros!]

{Dairy Free} Strawbery Smoothie

  • 1-4oz. container of Yami Vanilla yogurt
  • 6 frozen strawberries
  • 1/4 cup Coconut milk

Blend and serve!

It takes less than minute to whip up this smoothie and I make one for him most mornings.  He and I even shared one for dessert this week since it has been so hot in Seattle.  It was the perfect cool treat on a warm evening!  I love that I can easily change the frozen berries [blueberries, raspberries, blackberries}, use almond milk, and add fresh berries to keep things interesting.  As long as he drinks them, I will make them!

A PHOTO BOARD

June 28th, 2013

DSC_0100

In lieu of gifts, I asked the guests at my husband’s birthday party to bring along a photo of him {Recent, vintage, group or otherwise}.  The results of this request were one of the highlights of the evening.  My talented friend, Jen, made a gorgeous board for me.  Painted with chalkboard paint, guests were able to write the year the photo was taken.   I had simple roles of washi tape on hand to tape the photos onto the board.  New friends were able to see pictures from Aaron’s childhood and long time friends were able to share their favorite snapshots.  Everything from current day shots with our boys to prom photos, team pictures, a classic school photo, and the {now} infamous ski photo I used for the invitation.

It turned out even better than I hoped it would.  He has snap shots with all the people he loves in one place.  Now we need to find a place for it in his office.

A STREET FOOD PARTY

June 27th, 2013

DSC_0045

This was the year of parking a large truck in front of our house and calling it a party!  For Aaron’s 40th birthday, we hired a food truck to feed us for 2 hours.  The prep for this party was dreamy.  I simply filled some beverage dispensers with lemonade, threw ice and beer in galvanized tubs, and put my make-up on.  All the food was left in the hands of Contigo Mondern Mexican.

We served the Gorditas on trays in the back yard as appetizers.  They were small pockets of yummy [fried] goodness.  For dinner, each guest was able to order four tacos of their choice.  Many mixed and matched to sample them all.

DSC_0059

I loved how our guests mingled in the driveway when waiting for their tacos.  There were ongoing discussions regrading which taco was the favorite.  I am not sure there was a consensus, but my personal favorite was the Beef Picadillo.  The onion jam made this taco sweet and spicy.

To end our meal, we served churros.  Who doesn’t love a churro?  In my opinion, there is nothing better than fried crispy dough coated with cinnamon sugar.  I may have had more than one [and possibly one heated up the next morning for breakfast].

Contigo also brought along Habenero Lemonade.  It was curiously hot, sweet and spicy all at the same time.  There was vodka and tequila to mix in, as well as regular lemonade.  A signature cocktail that was simple and easy to serve.

The meal, from start to finish, was divine!  The Contigo staff served delicious food and were breeze to work with.  I would highly recommend hiring a food truck for a special occasion.  As the hostess, you have absolutely no stress regarding the meal and your guests will love it.

[If you live in the Seattle area, I used Seattle Food Truck to find Contigo.  It was an amazing resource to find a truck to cater your event.  Plus, it lists all of the food trucks in the area and where they are serving up food during the week.]
