HUMANS OF NEW YORK: STORIES

humans of new york stories | Where is June?

I am so excited that Humans of New York: Stories releases today.  Brandon Stanton inspires me everyday.  I have said it before and it is the absolute truth.  Humans of New York is the most honest, real, inspiring, touching and unique space on the Internet.  His photos are beautiful, but it is the words that accompany each picture that are the magic.  I look forward to Brandon’s posts and read every single one.

Here is what he says about the new book:

“HONY Stories comes out in less than one week! I’ve already said a lot about the merits of the book. So I want to take a quick opportunity to remind everyone that HONY is advertisement free and almost entirely financed by book sales. (The only exception being income from a handful of speeches I give every year.) Proceeds from books have been used to pay for trips to twenty different countries over the past year alone. Even when working with large organizations like the United Nations or UNHCR, I’m always very careful to cover all costs and reimburse any expenses. I do this so that the content on HONY can remain entirely independent, self-directed, and transparent. By purchasing a book, you can help HONY continue to grow in a way that remains focused on telling people’s stories— and nothing else. Thanks to everyone for your continued support.”

And a post from this week:

I eagerly await the arrival of my book!  Humans of New York: Stories will make a great gift.  Never too early to start that holiday shopping.

In the Details No 13 | Where is June?

And just like that it is the end of the week.  Hell ya for Friday!  We just finalized all of our travel plans for our trip to Argentina.  And yes, I am counting down the days.  Have you been to Buenos Aires?  I’d love any recommendations if you’ve got them.

I am still reeling from The Martian and having fantastic conversations with my boys about the film!   {Yesterday Little Man and I discussed how Watney pooped in space.}  If you haven’t already, you really must go this weekend.

A collection of things that inspire and interest me this week:

1. Instagram worthy!  The colorful buildings of the La Boca neighborhood in Buenos Aires.  {Stay tuned.}

2.  Black, white, gray, gold, and wood.  The perfect palette for a home.

3.  Mismatched cutlery in mason jars is pretty on display.

4.  A pennant to show my love!  {Other cities available.}

5.  I would love to wear my hair in this braid to an evening event.

6.  Chocolate chip and Caramel Sandwich Cookies.  That’s all.

7.   You must {MUST} watch the documentary, Iris.  She is the coolest bird around!

BEAUTY TOOLS ON DISPLAY

beauty tools on display | Where is June?

Recently I grew tired of having all my beauty tools and products thrown in a drawer.  Even though they were in a travel bag and small trays, I found that items were hard to find and often overlooked.   Inspired by this post about cosmetics on display, I decided to do something about it.  After covering one end of Target to the other, the idea of using an everyday kitchen item popped in my head.  I use a tea cup to store accessories, why not use a drinking glass to display beauty essentials?  At first my thought was to just display my brushes, but since the clear glasses were less than $5 -I grabbed two. Now, all of my make up brushes are in one glass and eye essentials {liners, mascara, brow gel, tweezers,} in another.  I loved it so much, I picked up one more glass at the thrift store for $.50, which is now home to lip sticks.  This inexpensive project somehow makes getting ready more fun and my bathroom counter colorful.

PS//  I also replaced all of my makeup brushes!  So worth it!

PPS//  Oh, the dark walls and hideous bathroom fixture!  My life is not perfectly styled.

TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO SEE THE MARTIAN

Tuesday, October 6th, 2015

My entire family saw The Martian this weekend and I have to say it might be one of the best movies I have ever seen!  More importantly, I am so happy my kids saw it.  Matt Damon describes the film as “a love letter to science”.  I whole-heartedly agree.  It also is a love letter to Mars, botany, computer programming, math, problem solving, perseverance, bravery, loyalty, and duct tape.  The characters in The Martian are flat out smart.  Like, crazy smart!  The women are strong leaders and team players.

The boys were at the edge of their seats for the entire movie.  I love that a block buster can inspire children to look at science and math in a completely different way.  Math and science could save your life.  The life lesson of “if at first you don’t succeed…..” was center stage and brought to life beautifully.  Yes, there were a few f-bombs.  {And yes, my children have heard the word before.}  Please don’t let that be a deal breaker.  Your family will be enthralled and inspired by this movie.  I can’t think of a better way to share a Saturday afternoon with your kids.

In the Details No 12 | Where is June?

Guys, it’s October.  This week was awesome and not for any reason in particular!  I’m hoping this weekend is just as fun and productive.  I want to change the chalkboard wall, catch up on reading the latest magazines on my coffee table, and bake a delicious fall dessert!

A few things that inspire and interest me this week:

1. That pool!  The weather is still gorgeous here, but that pool at The Parker!

2.  High heel denim ankle boots.  It is officially boot season again.  {Only $69.90}

3.  We are looking for colorful art for our family room.  I {heart} this Agate print.

4.  I really need a day between Saturday and Sunday.  Who doesn’t?

5.  Totally in love with this front door.

6.  Pumpkin Spice Snack Cake with Maple Glaze.  That’s all.

7.  Nine years ago, I wore a pair of 7 For All Mankind “Dojo” jeans everyday for a year.  Wide legs are back.  Should I buy them again?

In the Details No. 11 | Where is June?

Happy Friday!  It has been a fast-paced, busy week.  With school and kids’ activities in full swing, life is a bit of a blur.  Weekends are always a welcome respite.  What are your plans?  I am hoping to switch my closet over to fall and squeeze in a movie matinee.

A round-up of things that inspire and interest me this week:

1.  A friend is leaving for New York on a red eye tonight…..wish I was going with her.

2. Mirror, Mirror.  That strap is too good.

3.  A new podcast.  Perfect for a long run or a long commute!

4.  This formula for getting dressed and looking great is brilliant.

5.  Dying to see the new movie, The Intern.  Matinee anyone?

6.  Possibly a new signature drink.  An Old Cuban.

7.  Time to break out the beanie.  It is always a great solution to a bad hair day.

{JUNE LOVES} SOCALITY BARBIE

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015

Socality Barbie | Where is June?

Life is beautiful, white and bright, and perfectly curated. Well, at least it is for the creatives, hipsters, and the cool kids on Instagram.

So, how perfect is Socality Barbie?  A brunette, bombshell of a doll posing in all the cool Northwest spots, making your life look sad and depressing.  And totally making fun of all those living an authentic life and snapping shots of their artisan coffee.  Created by a Portland based photographer, choosing to remain anonymous, Socality Barbie is totally off the hook with over 1.2 million followers.  {Just two weeks ago, she only had 7,ooo!}  Personally, I laugh out loud every time a new post pops up in my feed.

Wired describes Socality Barbie:

Socality Barbie is a fantastic Instagram account satirizing the great millennial adventurer trend in photography. It’s an endless barrage of pensive selfies in exotic locales, arty snapshots of coffee, and just the right filter on everything. Anyone who’s flipped through an issue of Kinfolk gets the aesthetic. And it’s everywhere on Instagram.

The woman behind the account is a wedding photographer in Portland, Oregon, who wishes to remain anonymous so to preserve Socality Barbie’s authenticity. She created the Instagram about three months ago to poke fun at all the people hashtagging photos with #liveauthentic and #socality. The homogeneity of their authenticity and universality of their socality all but demanded satirization. “People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions,” she says. “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?’”

The descriptions make the pictures ridiculously funny.  Take 5 minutes and read a few.  I promise it will totally make your Wednesday!

Oh, and who can forget the hashtags?  #liveauthentic #thatpnwlife #finditliveit #communityfirst

FIND TIME TO READ: LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE

Luckiest Girl Alive |Where is June?

Whoa!  I couldn’t put this book down over the weekend.  In Luckiest Girl Alive, Jessica Knoll wrote a lead character who is smart, complex, damaged, brave, superficial and ambitious.  How is that possible?

I loved this book.  Not because the protagonist, Ani, is particularly likable because she isn’t.  I loved how the author carefully crafted her prose to give us insight through the inner monologue of Ani.  Most of the time it was cringe worthy, but is was always brutally honest.  Her painful past and true feelings were never hidden from the reader.

Without giving too much away, it is similar to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.  It has unexpected plot twists and is dark, quite dark.  I found myself thinking about the end of the book while running today.  I’m left with questions. Big ones.  And in my opinion that is a good thing!

What are you reading?

LEATHER HANDLES FOR DOORS AND DRAWERS

Leather closet pulls

Ok, so it all started with the doors of my beat-up entry way closet begging me to give them a face lift.  They are bi-folding doors and I plan to paint them black. In searching for something different than your typical knob as the pulls, I came across this picture of these amazing leather pulls on closet doors.  Brilliant!  Purchasing them seems to be costly, but I fairly certain I can make my own.  My dad is a skilled leather craftsman and I am willing to bet if I make him freezer jam he would help me bust a few of these out.  The closet doors will need a knob, so it is a loop of leather and a bolt.  We can do this!  Long handles don’t look to be much harder.

If my little DIY leather adventure works out, I might be swapping all my kitchen knobs and pulls, too!

In the Details No 10 | Where is June?

Next week it is officially fall and I can feel it!  The weather took a hard shift and the very cool mornings make it undeniably so.  But every season brings its own delights.  Fall ushers in cozy blankets, lazy Sundays and delicious comfort foods.  What are you up to this weekend?  Our little family is recovering from a very long two weeks, so low key and healthy are all I am looking for.

Inspiration surrounds us.  This is what inspires me this week.  Remember, love big!  It’s in the details.

1.   A fall hike on a piece of the Pacific Crest Trail.  I watched Wild again and the PCT is right in our backyard.

2.  Suede booties.  Wear them with cut off shorts now and a pair of skinnes later.

3.  Loving the colorful faux fur.  Bundle up in style!

4.  It is all fun and games until your jeans don’t fit.  {Truth hurts!}

5.  Moody and gorgeous.  The most beautiful print.

6.  Meyer Lemon Tart.  That’s all.

7.  Do you think I could teach myself to knit?  This blanket is amazing.
