IT’S NEVER OK

September 18th, 2017

Kelly Oxford started this conversation and the hashtag #notokay.  This isn’t a political post.  This wasn’t my planned post for today, but it literally wrote itself and forced me to push publish.

The event that wrote the post:

On Saturday night my family exited Husky Stadium in the 4th quarter.  Riding high from a soon-to-be solid victory, there was much celebrating and the tailgating had picked up again.  Although the walk was not far, there were many pedi-cabs at the exit offering rides to fans.  They were creatively lit and many had tunes pumping from portable speakers.  As we walked through the parking lot, I couldn’t help but notice a pedi-cap with two, middle-aged males being pedaled by a young female. You know the type: belligerent, loud and intoxicated.   They directed her to their vehicle.  She stopped the cab and stood up on her pedals.  One of the men promptly smacked her ass. They both laughed. Immediately aware that my 13 year old son witnessed it all, I looked at him and asked, “Did you see that?” He replied that he had seen it all.  The only thing that came to mind-which I quickly blurted out, “It’s never OK.”   He looked at me and said, “I know, Mom.”

At first I didn’t know why it pissed me off so intensely.  It’s not like it is the first time I had ever seen a woman get slapped on the ass.  Heck, it has happened to me countless times-in bars, sporting events, on the street, on a bus.  Then it dawned on me that it was probably the first time my son had seen it.  We haven’t had an in-depth conversation about it yet, but I can only imagine his brain was working overtime to figure it all out.  And after 43 years, I finally saw that aggressive action for EXACTLY what it is:  assault.  Gone are the days that I ignore it, accept it, simply endure it, or god-forbid even pretend to like it.  I should have said something.  Not to them, but I should have said something to her.  I should have walked over to her cab and stood with her.  After they left, I should have said, “I saw what they did.  You did nothing wrong.  You were doing a job.  It is not OK.”  Dammit, I should have said something to her.

I am going to stand on a virtual box and shout this truth out loud.  Do not touch me without my consent.  Do not comment on my legs as I ride my scooter past your construction site.  Do not slow your vehicle to shout and whistle at me when I am out for a run.  Do not let your hand linger when you give me a hug.  It is not flattering.  You are not being flirtatious. I am not a willing participant.  Do not slap her ass.  And do not let my kid see you do it!  It is never OK.

While my days of getting the hoots/hollers and grabs are limited and waning (thank you gravity and middle-age), there are younger women who are unlucky enough to fill my spot.  Please tell your story.  I know you have one. Tell it here. (I’ve added one of my stories to the comments.)  Share this this post.  Talk to a young woman or a young man.  If it was your daughter on that bike, it would never be OK.  NEWS FLASH: she is someone’s daughter!

CONNECT WITH YOUR TEEN THROUGH BOOKS

September 13th, 2017

a reading list

Permit me to totally geek out over a book list.  It might be the English Lit major in me, but man I’m excited about my 8th grader’s reading list for the year.  Last night was our curriculum night and his teachers shared the titles he will be reading this year.  The anchor document that his Language Arts teacher is using for the entire year is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Ya, things have come a long way since I was in 8th grade.  I was totally impressed!  Without hesitation, I decided to read all of them too.  (Yep, there’s the book nerd in me!)  Hopefully it will be a way to talk about school and life in a non-evasive way.  One must tread lightly with teens!  In the very least, I will know the topics he is discussing at school.  As school kicks into high gear, consider reading the books on your child’s required reading list.

HELP ME CHOOSE | NEW BOOTS

September 8th, 2017

boots

Happy Friday!  After a 3 month hiatus from shopping there are a few staples that I would like to add to my closet.  I want to buy only one new pair of shoes for fall/winter.  After consideration, I’ve decided it should be a new pair of black boots.  In Seattle you get a ton of wear out of boots throughout fall and winter -probably more than any other shoe.  While in bed last night I was doing a little online, window shopping and found these 4 beauties.  All quite similar, but each have a slightly different block heel and the materials differ as well. For fun, I’m throwing it out to you.  Which boot do you like best?  I purposefully have not included price or designer.  {I will update with shopping details later!}

Let me know what you think?

UPDATE:

Thank you to all the readers who responded on Friday!  I loved hearing the rationale of your selection.  #3 by Acne Studious had the fewest votes which is interesting. Although gorgeous those boots are by far the most expensive and never an actual option. #1 by Vince had a few votes for it’s lasting potential and uniform color with the black heel. #2 by Splendid and #4 by Jeffery Campbell were the darlings-with the Splendid boots getting the most votes.  My personal vote is either #2 or #4!  I’m going to order both and see which pair wins my heart.  I’ll keep you posted!

YOU MUST WATCH: YOUNGER

September 7th, 2017

younger_cast_interview_march

It seems every time I have a conversation with anyone- I will eventually hear about another new show I MUST WATCH.  It’s overwhelming really.  I personally don’t have enough free time in a week to watch all these amazing shows.  We may be the only couple who has not seen one episode Game of Thrones.

But, I have new guilty pleasure.  Younger.  “40-year-old Liza (Sutton Foster) passes herself off as 26 to land a job. Now she has to make sure no one discovers her secret.”  I am mid-way through season 1 and I’m totally hooked.  With 4 seasons, I’ve got plenty of Hulu binge watching ahead of me!

I’m afraid to ask, but what show(s) are you loving?

5 PRODUCTS FOR 5 MINUTE MAKE-UP

September 5th, 2017

5 minute makeup | Where is June?

Every day makeup in 5 minutes or less.  That has been my goal all summer.  Simple and clean.

It only takes 5 products:

1. Start with Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.  I have used this for years.  I occasionally will try something else and I always find my way back to this trusted staple.  It is lightweight with the perfect amount of minimal coverage.  I wear the color sand.

2.  A new darling in my make up bag is Cloud Paint by Glossier.  It is the best cream blush I have ever used.  I am now a forever addict.  This summer I have been using Dusk.  {Watch all the videos to help you pick the best shade.}

3.  Play up your natural brows by using Boy Brow also by Glossier.  Replace your brow gel with this.  The tiny wand allows for great precision and the color is great.  I use brown.

4.  Lastly curl your lashes, apply primer, and mascara.

That’s it.  In the winter I will have to add in concealer for my very dark under eye circles, but hope to keep the rest the same.

Just curious: How many make up products do you use everyday?

PS: If I want a little extra pop, I use this favorite matte lip balm.

COMME DES GARCONS PLAY CONVERSE

September 1st, 2017

play converse | Where is June?

I picked my girlfriend up for lunch a while back and she was wearing the best pair of Converse ever!  She wore the white Comme des Garcones Play classic Chuck -with the delightful red heart and eyeballs!  To say I nearly died is selling my reaction way short! Just a little research and I found these amazing images.  I can’t even.  The rattier the better, in my opinion.  My friend wore hers with a pair of chinos, but you could rock them with denim, shorts or a dress!

Not cheap, but I’ve had my Chuck Taylors for YEARS-so I know the price-per-wear will eventually be very low.

What do you think?

DEAR BOYS: A LETTER ON THE FIRST DAY

August 31st, 2017

dear boys | WHERE IS JUNE?

Dear boys,

Our summer came to an abrupt end this morning.  After weeks of sun and friends and freedom, you face weeks of structure, work and responsibility.  As I tasked you in organizing your backpacks, charging your iPad, packing your lunch and finding a book- I realized how much we have grown. Obviously you have physically grown, but the maturity that is emerging is astonishing to me.  You are becoming self-sufficient young men in front of my eyes.  I have learned to literally “chill out” and continually try to NOT sweat the small stuff.  (I didn’t even make Henry change his stained t-shirt this morning.  I’m showing great progress.)

When I think about what I want for you this year, my list is simple.  I want you to be yourselves.  That’s it.  I feel like the rest of the stuff is working itself out.  You are learning to be trustworthy.  You are both reasonably kind people.  For the most part, people enjoy your company.  You occasionally eat a vegetable.  I love you for the unique beings you are.  Keep on being weird, stubborn, caring, fiery, funny and unpredictable.  My promise is to guide you and not try and change you.  I’ll support you in your passions-even if I don’t get it.  Your dad and I are lucky to be on this ride with you.  Although we may annoy you, we are your biggest fans. Always.

As you charge into 5th and 8th grade, try to keep it together.  If you fall flat on your face, I will help you pick up your yard sale.  And I will also do your laundry every once in awhile.

Have a great day 2. Love, Mom

BAMBOO ARK BAG

June 27th, 2017

Bamboo Ark Bag

I finally made a full closet transition to summer.  It was a slow start here in Seattle, but with temperatures in the 90’s this past weekend I feel as if the season has truly arrived.

I have decided that my closet would be infinitely cooler with this gorgeous straw bag.  The Large Bamboo Ark Bag by Cult Gaia is a Pinterest darling.  I mean, look how it makes every outfit completely amazing.  Equally awesome with denim or black trousers?  How is that even possible?  I don’t jet set around European beaches in the summer, but it would also be perfect if we were heading to dinner by boat. {Yes a luxury, but a total perk to living on a lake in Seattle!}  I could throw in a sweater, my wallet and phone, my sunglasses case and a little pouch with a hair tie, lipstick and Aaron’s reading glasses.  {Does anyone else have to carry their husband’s reading glasses so he can read a menu?}

Do you love this bag as much as I do??

A TEENAGER IN THE HOUSE

June 21st, 2017

teenager in the house

Today marks 13 years of being a mother.  It actually seems astonishing to me, but then I look at pictures and it is all too real.  My Will was the sweetest and happiest baby on the block.  With his blond curls and killer blue eyes, I was smitten from minute one.  There was something reassuring about those early days.  Lucky for me I didn’t have any postpartum depression or sadness.  It was actually quite the opposite.  I instantly loved every part of having a baby and felt confident as a mother.

Then Will became a toddler and a pre-schooler.  All of my conceptions that I was “doing it right”, that I so naively assumed when he was tiny, were thrown out the window!  To say he was a spirited child is a complete understatement.  I read every book, tried every strategy and cried and yelled a ton!  He was so darn cute and inquisitive, but never easy.  I would later learn that many of our battles were directly related to ADHD, but at the time I was just a horribly ineffective mother (or so I believed).  Adding Henry to the mix upped the ante.  I had become a mom to two ridiculously over-active boys and I was outmatched on a daily basis.

Will has grown into an amazing young man.  He is passionate and fun-loving.  I have never met anyone so willing to try new things without trepidation.  His interests are alternative and that is 100% awesome!  I don’t particularly love Star Trek, but I listen intently to all of his factoids.  Our path together has been anything but straight. But he is hitting his stride and has matured in ways I didn’t think possible even a year ago!

I’m not sad that he is turning 13 because he is so pleased about getting older.  Don’t you remember that feeling?   However, I am keenly aware that our precious time together under one roof is ebbing.  He is finding independence and needing me less and less.  Proud to be his mom doesn’t even come close to describing how I feel.  I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for this beautiful creature.  I am the lucky one!
