{MOM UNIFORM} WINE TASTING

August 27th, 2015

mom uniform -wine tasting | Where is June?

I thought it was about time for a new mom uniform.  My husband and I are spending the weekend in the Washington wine country for a little fun.  It has been two years since we have done any wine tasting, so it is a total treat.

The anchor of this uniform is a simple, black tank dress { I also loved this dress}.  Light weight and flowy, it is great in warm weather.  Everything else is just an accessory.  How fun is that?  I’ve learned that having your hands free is key when wine tasting.  A cross-body bag would work, but I am pushing my fashion comfort zone and going for a fanny pack. {Stay with me.}  With all that sun, a wide brimmed hat and sunnies are essential.  A pair of wrap-around ankle strap sandals show off a fresh pedicure in white.  A leather bracelet and a bold feather pendant give interest to a fairly simple outfit. Every uniform needs a pop of color. A bold orange lip in an iridescent sheen finishes off the look.

GIRL CRUSH: TIG NOTARO

August 26th, 2015

Tig Nataro

A few weeks ago, when I had the TV all to myself, I watched the touching documentary Tig on Netflix.  I was transfixed by the humor, the sadness, and by Tig.  The story follows stand-up comedian, Tig Notaro.  In short, Tig faces unimaginable odds in one calendar year to be topped off with a breast cancer diagnosis.  How does she respond?  She does a comedy set about it {and wins a Grammy}.  It is a story of resiliency, love, loss, and humor.  But most importantly, she is really, really funny.

I am totally crushin’ on Tig.

Then, to my surprise, a comedy special aired for the first time this past weekend on HBO called Boyish Girl Interrupted.  I missed it, but thank goodness for On Demand.  My boys wandered in when I was watching and they sat down and started laughing immediately. {I am certain that it isn’t 100&% kid appropriate, they just watched a few minutes before I turned it off.}

I highly recommend watching BOTH if you can.  I am also dying to watch a Showtime special with Tig in which she does stand-up in people’s homes, but I am not a subscriber.  Anyone have Showtime and want to invite me over?

FIELD TRIP FRIDAY: SEATTLE BOULDERING PROJECT

August 21st, 2015

seattle bouldering project | Where is June?

With the boys still home with me for summer, our field trips need to meet two requirements.  The trip needs to be kid friendly {obviously} and active.  This week we took a trip to the Seattle Bouldering Project {SBP}.  My boys love to climb at this gym.   Since most playgrounds these days have a bouldering wall, they are extremely comfortable with the hand and foot holds.  I appreciate the welcoming feel of SBP.  There are some serious climbers and they are always so upbeat and kind to the boys.  A couple of months ago, I went with a friend to climb and actually really enjoyed it.  She showed me the ropes and I wasn’t so intimidated.  Plus, it is a fantastic workout.  This last trip we all climbed together.

While climbing with the boys this time, I realized all the amazing life lessons they are learning while climbing.  In just a short amount of time I saw problem solving, team work, perseverance, resiliency, camaraderie, and patience.  The boys watch the more skilled climbers if they are have difficulty with a climb.  They observe a strategy and then put it into action.  Quite amazing really!  While not a reason for the field trip, it sure is a huge plus!

The hours make it easy to pop in any time during they day.  You literally need nothing.  They rent shoes and you can borrow chalk.  Just remember to wear clothes that allow you to move and climb.

FIELD TRIP FRIDAY: ARTISTS AT PLAY

August 14th, 2015

artists at play |Where is June?

The boys and I took an excellent field trip to Artist at Play in Seattle Center.  Nestled behind the Experience Music Project, it is an enormous playground fitted with ropes, slides, towers, slides and ladders.  Any kid that loves to climb will totally dig it!  There is a small section for small children, but it is definitely geared for older kids.  Younger kids will need some assistance navigating the ropes.  My kids disappeared in 2 seconds flat, so if that makes you anxious you might visit once September arrives and the crowds of tourists diminish.  I suggest having your kids wear shoes and socks, not sandals or flip flops.  This will allow them to climb easily, plus the turf under the structure was extremely hot.

Add a little bit more fun by riding the Monorail and grabbing a bite to eat at the Armory.

SUMMER NIGHTS ON THE PATIO

August 12th, 2015

summer nights on the patio | Where is June?

There is something about August nights that make me want to linger outside well past dark.   A few friends, some good music, and great food is all you need for a perfect evening.  As the hostess, keeping it simple ensures I will enjoy myself as well.  For planning, I think of three categories:  easy food to nibble on, one signature drink, and delicious sweets.  In the summer, seasonal fruit can be front and center.  Use it in drinks and appetizers.  And there is something about summer that screams chocolate cake and cookies.

Here’s to a great evening on your patio or deck.  CHEERS!

A BOOK OF NAMES AND FACES

August 11th, 2015

a book of names | Where is June?

Look at that face?  How could you not love him?!  Meet my adorable nephew, Brecken.  This darling boy just turned two.  He adores his big boy cousins, but he lives far from us.  {Too far, for our liking!}  Knowing that he is at the age where “reading books” is at an all time high, I made him a book for his birthday to help him remember all of his family in Washington.

Pinhole Press made it easy to make this special gift.  Their Mini Book of Names and Faces is beautiful and sturdy!  I was impressed by the quality of the pictures.  The colors were vibrant and even pictures I pulled from my sister-in-law’s Facebook page turned out perfect.  Each page pairs a vibrant color and name with a picture.  Excellent for toddlers to read with a parent or all on their own.  Word has it, the book was a huge hit!  Wouldn’t it make a great gift for expectant mothers as a shower gift?

PS:  I remember when I sent Big W to daycare at the tiny age of 8 weeks!  We sent a picture of our family in case he was sad. {Leaving him that first day, is still fairly traumatic for me to think about.} This book would be so fantastic to give any caregiver to comfort little ones.

This post is not sponsored, just inspired.  xo

LIFE WITH BOYS

August 10th, 2015

life with boys

I’ve touched on this topic before, but I feel it is essential to continue talking about it.  In the world of social media, the comparison game becomes overwhelming!  One of my goals with this blog, from the very beginning, was to just keep it real.  Present real life, the beautiful and the ugly.  I hope that I have been successful in accomplishing that. Simple enough, but it seems that it gets harder and harder as time passes.

If you follow me on Instagram, you will know that I love to use the hashtag #lifewithboys.  It explains my life in a nutshell.  Raising two boys is a full contact sport.  The photos capture tender moments with my boys, adventure, accomplishments, and tons of fun.  And it is all true.  What is equally important is what is NOT posted.

I am not a perfect mother.  My children are far from perfect.  We are not the perfect family.  There is no such thing.  We all know that, right?  If we know that, why can’t we proudly shout it from the rooftops {or in our status updates}?  Summer is especially difficult because the guilt weighs heavily.  Oh, they should be reading more.  I should be more organized.  We should be doing something productive.  They should be reading more.

While it is awesome to be the mom that rides every water slide or plays Marco Polo, remember it is also OK to plant yourself in a lounge chair and take a moment to breathe.  Albeit impressive to create a chore chart for your children and actually follow through,  you can also do it yourself and then simmer about all you do without any help!  The fact is no mother is going to post a selfie of herself screaming at kids to get off the damn iPad.  Just know that is happening everywhere, everyday.

I will continue to share about the not-so-lovely things, because we are all in this together.  Please promise you will try to be kind to yourself.  And if you are brave, share a story with a friend that shows we can all fall short of perfection and live to tell about it.

PS:  comparison is deadly and the not-so-glamorous shots….

IN THE DETAILS – NO. 9

July 31st, 2015

in the details no. 9 | Where is June?

This is my favorite weekend of the summer.  The Blue Angels buzz our little island over and over and over.  They amaze me every year!  Big W and I are taking the kayaks to the lake for a front row seat today.  What are your plans?

A few items that inspired me this week.  Remember, love big.  It’s in the details.

1.  These falls.  Me.  November!

2.  These amazing heels sold out!  I am still not over it.

3.  Do you want to send yourself to camp?  You can.

4.  Diamonds Adventures are Forever.  xo

5.  The most awesome yo-yo ever.  Never too early to buy a stocking stuffer.

6.  Mini-pie crusts.  That’s all.

7.  Decorating with pink.  Yay or nay?

FOURTEEN YEARS

July 28th, 2015

happy anniversary

Who are these babies pictured -so happy {and tan}?  Man, they look insanely happy, don’t they?

This picture was snapped just days after we returned from our honeymoon.  We are celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary today.  Fourteen years is a pretty good run.

Here is what I know after 14 years:

1.  I would still pick the same guy.

2.  If you didn’t receive {birthday, Valentine, etc} cards before you were married, it is never going to happen.

3.  Saying nothing is sometimes the best course of action.

4.  Getting the last word isn’t important, as long as, deep down, you know you are 100% correct.

5.  Just let me be in charge.  It works better that way.

Love you babe!  Can’t imagine navigating this crazy world without you.

SUMMER FUN: SEND THEM TO CAMP

July 27th, 2015

send them to camp

{camp orkila, Orcas Island, WA}

Looking for summer fun for your kids?  Send them to camp.  Not just camp.  Sleep away camp.  I know it may be late for the this summer, but put in the back of your head for next year.   Most camps open enrollment in January, some even earlier.  Or, hey,  jump online and see if there are any openings for camp in August.  Big W went to camp for the first time at age 8.  {Little Man was 7.} Without a doubt, they come home from camp dirty and tired, but also a little more grown up.

Big W and Little Man have grown immeasurably from their time away.  I see the growth in three main ways:

1.  Independence

#1 and always so surprising.  They return from camp more mature and more capable than when they left.  Most importantly, they learn to navigate the world with all their idiosyncrasies without my help.  Don’t like the food, figure it out.  Can’t fall asleep, figure it out.  Not getting along with a friend, figure it out.  Not sure of an activity, figure it out.

2.  Appreciation

Oh, this is a big one.  They appreciate home, their bed, their siblings, your cooking, and your hugs a little bit more.  Distance does make the heart grow fonder and it works for kids too.  They also gain an appreciation for the great outdoors.  The camps’ locations are so beautiful they can’t help but fall in love with nature.

3.  Confidence

Quite simply, they can do it.  And when they return home, they know it.

camp orkila | Orcas Island, WA

Camp is good for you too, for all the same reasons!  You get a bit of independence {even if it is just for a week}, you miss them terribly and appreciate the energy they bring to your house, and you gain confidence in knowing you will, eventually, be able to let them go.

If I could afford it {and allow it}, Big W would be gone all summer.  Jumping from camp to camp.  Each one offers new experiences, new challenges, and a new location.  Who know which camps next summer will bring, but rest assured they will both be packed and ready.
