TRAVEL ARGENTINA- IGUAZU FALLS

December 9th, 2015

travel argentina

On our recent trip to Argentina, we took a mid-week excursion from Buenos Aires.  We jumped on a local airline and visited the town of Puerto Iguazu and the astonishing Iguazu Falls.  These amazing falls occur at the borders of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil.  We did not apply for a Brazilian visa, so we stayed on the Argentinian side of the falls.

The flight, although only 90 minutes, was the most turbulent flight I have ever experienced.  It was no joke! We arrived in the early afternoon to a torrential, sub-tropical downpour.  After checking into our hotel and planning our trip to the falls the following day, we waited out the rain and then ventured into town.  Puerto Iguazu was very different from the hustle of Buenos Aires.  Small businesses lined the streets and it definitely had a small town feel.  The people were incredibly kind and children played on the side walks. We had an extremely fun day and all of us count the time we spent there as one of the highlights of the trip. A completely different side of Argentina and certainly worth experiencing.

Puerto Iguazu, Argentina | Where is June?

Our trip was really short – basically 24 hours -and we didn’t have much time at Iguazu Falls.  In hindsight, our departing flight should have been much later in the day so that we could have really had time to see the entire park.  We made the most of the time we had there and went for the “extreme” experience.  Boarding a 4 x 4 for a trek through the jungle, we bounced for a few miles down to the river.  We stuffed all of our belongings into dry bags, which coincidentally were soaking wet on the inside, and braced ourselves.  A boat ride took us upriver and through some really fun rapids. Then we caught a glimpse of the enormous falls in the distance.  No picture can do these falls justice.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina | Where is June?

The view of the falls from the water was breathtaking, but the view of the falls INSIDE the falls was exhilarating.  Imagine someone turning on a fire hose and shooting it straight at you.  While I would have loved to open my eyes and see the what it looked like-it was virtually impossible.  There was lots of screaming and tons of laughing.  It was really quite something. We should have brought our GoPro.  The footage would be really fun to have.  After departing the boat, we had time to walk the trails.  The views from land were also fantastic, albeit a little dryer.  Would I recommend allowing someone to drive you into these falls?  YES!  Would I recommend a swim suit, poncho and a set of dry clothes for after? YES!  However, the after shots of us soaking wet make me giggle.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina | Where is June?

The surrounding park was filled with trails, monkeys and more vantage points of the falls.  A train takes you to the top with a lookout and viewing deck.  We didn’t have time to get up there, but the pictures we saw highlight exactly how much water is coming over the top.  A TON!  Iguazu Falls are truly a natural wonder of the world.  If you find yourself in Argentina {or Brazil} I highly recommend it!

HOLIDAY LUNCHEON-OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

December 8th, 2015

holiday lunch | Where is June?

Not every holiday gathering happens at night.  And it doesn’t always call for cocktail attire. The inspiration for this week’s Outfit of the Week is a holiday luncheon with your girlfriends.  While maintaining my need to be casual, I paired my favorite pair of rag & bone jeans with a feminine blouse.  With a nod to holiday sparkle, I am “dressing up the jeans” with the most beautiful colored pumps, a ladylike clutch, and a statement necklace.

Perfect for a lovely lunch with your best girls.  Shop the whole look in the Where is June? shop now!

In the Details-Holiday Edition | Where is June?

For the next few Fridays, this series will be holiday gift editions.  I will try to share gifts for all the gals, guys and kids in your lives.  I love browsing in shops and stores, but let’s be honest, the majority of my shopping happens with a click of a mouse.

Here is the first of my finds:

1.  Peppermint Cocoa for your neighbors.  Easy to make and all the ingredients can be found at the grocery store.

2.  These might be the cutest long johns ever!  They are like running tights with the most darling pattern.

3.  Road tape for the little car lover in your life.  My boys would have LOVED this!

4.  Bloody Mary kit from Mouth, the new and hip Hickory Farms.

5.  Trials Fusion, an  Xbox One game without violence.  They are hard to find!

6.  I am in love with this backpack by Will Leather Goods.  Perfect for me, but I think the guys would love it too.

7.  Gold helium balloon ornament.  The perfect addition to any tree!  {Or tie it on a package.}

TRAVEL ARGENTINA- BUENOS AIRES

December 3rd, 2015

travel argentina

We spent a week in Buenos Aires last month and we couldn’t have asked for a better trip.  Why Argentina you ask? Aaron and I had once talked about going to Buenos Aires and then we had kids.  Needless to say, it has been on the list for quite awhile.  I luckily found three other couples excited and willing to travel to South America with us.  Oh and to end the trip -we planned to see Pearl Jam play live in concert. {This made the men very happy!}

First off, it is quite a journey to get to Buenos Aires.  From Dallas Fort-Worth, it is a 10 1/2 hour flight {11 hours on the way home}.  Luckily ours was an overnight flight.  So with a little bit of sleep, we hit the ground running once we arrived!

WHERE IS JUNE? + BRICK & PORTAL

December 1st, 2015

Brick & Portal Store Front | Where is June?

I have really fun news today!  Where is June? is not only a blog, but a store too!  It is kind of a dream come true!  Partnering with start-up Brick & Portal, I have opened a shop which will feature apparel, accessories and beauty essentials for your modern uniform.  I personally choose everything individually, so each item is something I love.  Brick and Portal partners with online retailers.  Simply click on an item in my store that you are dying to have and you will be redirected to a site to purchase.  In the months to come more retailers are coming on board, so I will be able to offer an expanded inventory.   I will continually be editing the items in the store, so be sure to check back regularly.  {www.whereisjune.brickandportal.com}  I also added a new link to my menu bar for quick navigation to the store.

Each Tuesday I will feature an #OOTW {Outfit of the Week}.  This week the outfit is inspired by Tiffany Wendel.  A pair of boyfriend jeans, a white t, bomber jacket, and Golden Goose sneakers.  Effortlessly cool and casual!

The store has three other distinct sections:

uniform |Where is June?

Separates for a modern uniform. I describe my style as casual with a little edge.  I love comfort, ease, and just a bit of cool.  Jeans, booties, sneakers, and T shirts are staples in my closet.

accessorize | Where is June?

Accessories complete your look.  Layered necklaces, hats, bags, and glasses are just a few of the finishing touches that give any outfit that extra something.  I have a soft spot in my heart for accessories.  {They always fit!}  Brands that I have written about before {Warby Parker, BaubleBar, and Stella & Dot} are all in shop now!

beauty essentials | Where is June?

Finally, a few beauty products that I use and could not live without.   I look forward to adding more products as additional retailers come online.

Thank you so much for supporting me in this new adventure.  The site is still in beta and I am one of the very first store fronts.  How cool is that?  Please contact me with any feedback on the store or any problems you may encounter.  If you like what you see, please spread the word and share Where is June? the store!

A WEEKLY PLAN

November 30th, 2015

a weekly plan | Where is June?

I am bringing back a favorite series.  In the Kitchen- A Weekly Plan is written to help limit the stress that comes with putting a healthy dinner on the table.  With busy lives and kids’ practices and activities happening at all hours during the evening, dinner might be the only time we have to look each other in the eye and spend uninterrupted time together.  This post provides six meal ideas for you.  Pick and choose which recipes work for your family.  My hope is that you get at least one meal to add to your menu this week!  I have tried them all and provide notes and the link below.

A few things to know in case you are new:

1.  I usually make my plan for the week on Saturday.

2.  I do all the cooking in my family.

3.  My #1 criteria for weeknight meals is quick and easy.  No meal I post [unless a Sunday Dinner or a slow cooker meal] will take more than 45 minutes to prepare.

4.  All meals are 100% gluten free and dairy free.  [Because we are fun like that!]

5.  My kids do not eat everything I serve.  [And that, my friends, is an entirely different post.]

A Weekly Plan-

1//  Chana Masala

This Indian dish was superb.  Full of flavor and easy to make.  It does call for many spices {some you may not have in your pantry}.  Review and grab the spices you need so you are ready.  I served with rice.

2//  Pumpkin Avocado Tostadas

OMG!  Seriously.  These tostadas are a new favorite.  I might make a variation every week!  I used sweet potatoes instead of roasting a pumpkin.  The spice was perfect.  Crisping the corn tortillas in the oven for just 15 minutes created the perfect base to build upon!  TRY THESE!

3//  Sweet Potato Hash with Sausage

Breakfast for dinner.  My husband loves hash, so this was a crowd pleaser.  I added mushrooms for extra texture and flavor.

4//  Spicy Sausage, Spinach, and Mushroom Gnocchi

This was my favorite meal!  I am a pasta girl and this dish was perfect.  So easy and simple, but I loved every bite.  I used Capello’s Gluten Free Gnocchi.   They are little pillows of potato goodness.

5//  Spicy Fish and Potato Soup

This soup has been featured before.  It is excellent on cold nights.  Quick to make and the white fish provides a healthy protein alternative.

6//  Chicken Tamale Pie

Comfort food at its best.  Use a rotisserie deli chicken to make this meal even easier.  Add the spices at step 3 instead.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

November 25th, 2015

happy thanksgiving

Tomorrow we feast!  I don’t particularly love all foods associated with Thanksgiving, but give me an entire bowl of stuffing and I am a happy girl!  My little family is taking a day trip tomorrow, cheering on our U of W Huskies on Friday at Husky Stadium, and ramping up the holiday spirit!  Maybe a little ice skating or a tree lighting, or skiing?  Or perhaps I put my husband on the roof to put our lights up while it is predicted to be sunny and dry?

I will be staying away from Black Friday madness {although Little Man is totally enthralled with Black Friday and the sales} and instead cuddling up the with boys and drinking a cup of cheer!  Whatever your holiday weekend holds…. I hope it is safe, fun, and exactly what you want!

See you back here on Monday.

{JUNE LOVES} COLORING BOOKS FOR GROWNUPS

November 24th, 2015

just add color | Where is June?

I’m into it.  Coloring, that is!   Call it cheap therapy and a great way to pass the time in the dead of winter.  There is something about coloring that is very zen and relaxing.  Of course you can use any coloring book, but I wanted something that didn’t involve superheros or Transformers.  Instead, I found books made for adults that want to color again.  And since I am a grown up, I bought myself a pack of really nice pencils.  Want to come over and color?

A HOLIDAY PALETTE

November 23rd, 2015

holiday wrap palette | Where is June?

‘Tis the season and it’s time to wrap! Last year I shared my holiday palette of gift wrap and my admission of being OCD when it comes to wrapping presents.  I love choosing new papers each year and The Container Store has the best gift wrap shop!  Last year my theme was Snowy Cottage Glam and included golden glitter paper.  The palette was amazing but the glitter sucked.  I can’t stand the side-effects of glitter.  One gift and I was covered in glitter, as was my bedroom floor.

This year my theme is Festive Mountain Lodge.  Steering clear of the glitter, I am choosing a more understated, woodsy theme.  I fell in love with navy blue antler wrap and built the rest of the palette around it.  Antlers, birch bark, gray gabardine, and winter plaid papers are exactly what I imagine under the tree at a rustic mountain lodge.  Tie-ons and ribbon will finish the packages.  I kind of love it!

IN THE DETAILS- NO. 18

November 20th, 2015

In the Details No 18 | Where is June?

How is Thanksgiving next week?  And how is it almost December?  Mind boggling.  I have no hosting duties next week and I am still awaiting my assignments.  Maybe I will just be bringing wine!?  My boys {all 3 of them} and I are going to enjoy four whole days together.  I am praying for no homework and lots of time on the couch.  I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your friends or family.

A few things that inspire and interest me this week:

1. Simple wrapping paper ideas. {I will be deciding upon my palette very soon!}

2.  Wow.  I, mean.  These shoes!

3.  Loving the cat eye and healthy glow.

4.  I came to get down. -Blitzen.  Read Between the Lines wins again with this gift bag.

5.  3 ways to style a lob.

6.  Big Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies with Caramel.  Ummmm…..

7.  A structured jacket, a soft silk skirt and bad ass boots.  Brave outfits like this one inspire me to try unexpected things with my wardrobe.  {Those boots!}
