four to follow

Do you Instagram??  It is quickly becoming my favorite social-media site.  Something about  4×4 pictures that makes me outrageously happy!  I decided to start a series called Four to Follow.  Just a quick heads up on four accounts I think you might like {or love}!  If you are not on Instagram, I highly recommend it.  Come play…it’s super fun!

@darlingmagazine

The official account for the magazine Darling.  As self described: “Darling isn’t just a magazine, it’s a movement. Our print magazine is a guidebook to lead you through the seasons of the year and your life. We exist to encourage and empower women and be a voice of love.”  I subscribe to the print magazine as well as follow them on Instagram.  I am blown away by their mission and their pictures are inspiring.  Darling is the art of being a woman.

@ascotandhart

Ascot and Hart is an online store founded by the girls behind Target Does It Again.  Their style is mix between boho and grunge.  I always love the outfits they put together and their original style!

@taylorsterling

Taylor Sterling is the founder of Glitter Guide.  Her account is flooded with details from her everyday life, Glitter Guide adventures and her darling baby girl, Elodie.

@dschwen

The Instagram account of David Schwen is creative in every sense.  I can’t really put his images into words….you just have to see them!  Each day I smile when I see his fun and original posts.

Do you have any accounts that you love to follow?

DRAGON DICTATION

dragon dictation | Where is June?

Homework.  What is your story?  No kid loves homework.  I best most don’t like it, but can get it done quickly if they just sit down and crank it out.  However, others find homework the most frustrating part of their day.  Any child with a learning difficulty sees homework in a very different way.  Struggle, anxiety, arguments, defeat.  If you are in this space, I am so {SO} sorry.  We have been there and I prefer not to go back. Big W was diagnosed with ADHD a little over two years ago.  I look forward to writing about our journey with attention disorder when he wants to share it.  It is his story, not mine.

I love to share ideas that have helped us.  This year {grade 4}, Big W has used the app Dragon Dictation to complete his weekly writing homework.  His greatest struggle is getting all of his wonderful ideas from his mind onto paper.  His inability to focus late in the day made this process even more frustrating.  Dragon Dictation is a very simple dictation app that records your voice and converts it to text.  Like any voice recognition software, it isn’t perfect.  Big W has found that speaking slowly and enunciating clearly gets him the best results.  He can easily correct mistakes with the keyboard and also type additional text.

The quality of his writing has dramatically improved.  He is eager to choose great words and descriptive language that he would ordinarily not use if he was physically writing.  His voice shines through in his weekly writing assignments.  It is the greatest thing since sliced bread as far as we are concerned.  To turn in the final copy we can either email his teacher directly from the app or cut and paste from an email to a Word document.

If you have a child that might benefit from this app, I suggest just playing around with it first before using it for homework.  Your child might find he doesn’t like it.  Also, make sure to speak with your child’s teacher and let him or her know that you would to use this app for homework completion.

Good luck!  Shoot me an email {denise@whereisjune.com} if you any questions.  I am happy to help if I can!

MAGNETIC ALPHABET

Magnetic Alphabest iPad App

With the school year going strong, homework is in full effect.  There may be some kids that LOVE to do more work after school, but my guys are not two of them.  Little Man has had homework for a total of two days {in his entire life} and he is already sick of it.  Oh, boy.  This is going to be a long 12 years.

Since both boys love to use the iPad, it is motivating to use it for homework.  What better way to use it?

Magnetic Alphabet is perfect app to use while practicing spelling words.  The kids simply tap and drag the “magnetic” letters to build each of their words.  They can change the letters’ colors and the background.  The app features upper case and lower case letters, symbols, and numbers, {plus shapes and pictures for fun.}. It works great for kids in primary grades {k-2} because their words tend to be short.  If your sweet things grumble about spelling practice….this $1.99 app might just save your sanity.

spelling t-e-s-t-s

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Well, it’s Monday!  For most children in elementary school, that means there will be a weekly spelling list coming home today.  Cue dramatic music….dun, dun. dun.  Some may know all the words today, but others will have to do a bit of studying.

The task of practicing spelling words can be monotonous at best.  So why not jazz it up with some technology magic?  I have two ideas that work great in our house.

1.  Spelling City
http://www.spellingcity.com/

Easy, interactive website that allows you to enter your child’s weekly list.  Your kids can practice their words during the week with activities using the week’s words.  The website can even give them a practice test for you.

2.  Magnetic Alphabet Lite- app for your iPad

FREE!!

 Remember alphabet magnets for your fridge? This is the updated version.  Kids easily drag the bright letters from the bottom of the screen to spell their words.  Great for little ones that live in your house too!  Perfect for early letter recognition.

Hope these help this week!
