I (heart) McQueen x 2!

June 4th, 2011

Let’s be honest!  I think walking a red carpet in a gorgeous Alexander McQueen gown would be A-mazing!  Hair, make up, accessories (borrowed from Neil Lane), and a dress that is JUST perfect for me.

However, I live in reality (and mostly in my gym clothes).  I am far removed from any Hollywood premiere, BUT anticipation does build in my home for the release of an epic blockbuster.  The characters faced many deep, rooted personal shortcomings in the first film.  We all fell in love with their honesty, humor, and determination! Who doesn’t love when Lightning McQueen finally figures out that friends are more important that winning the Piston Cup?  There may not be a red carpet…..but we shall be there opening night! (Well, maybe the opening day matinee!?!)

This is BIG people.  Where will you be on June 24th?

Why buy when you can borrow?

June 2nd, 2011

Brilliant!  Calling all those with an “e” reader device…  you can borrow electronic books from your library.  Who knew?

I have recently entered the ebook world, via our iPad 2.  Our local library system loans you up to 20 titles for 21 days each!  Ask at your library for details and if this service is available, but I am almost certain it will be for you too!  There is a wait list for many of the “hot” titles, but you simply get an email when it is ready for you to download.  It could not be easier!  What great summer titles will you download?

For those of you using the King County Library System, there are easy to follow directions (for various electronic readers) on the KCLS web page.  http://www.kcls.org/downloads/

Xtreme Makeover.

June 1st, 2011

I am in Love (with a capital L) with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and the two books that followed. Although it took me 2 tries and a good 150 pages to truly get into the first book, I am certifiably head-over-heels for Lisbeth Salander.  Ok, yes, she is a bit nuts.  Unorthodox, true.  Totally bad ass, hell ya!  I am empathic to her character, although I am sure not every reader feels the same.  (I feel like a tiny sliver of Lisbeth resides somewhere deep inside me.)

Hollywood is in the final stages of making the first installment of this book trilogy.   On Tuesday, a trailer was circulating for the upcoming movie, but was quickly pulled by Sony Pictures.  Oh, how I want it to be GOOD!  My hopes are high after seeing the total and complete transformation of Rooney Mara, the actress cast to play Lisbeth.  Check at the Before and After shots of this makeover gone horribly “right”!

The movie isn’t set to release until December 21, 2011.  The hype is building.  Can it live up?

The Perfect Pairing!

May 31st, 2011

What is better than a steamed artichoke? Can’t think of many things!  It is the perfect snack or appetizer to enjoy on a long, lazy afternoon. (Maybe even with a glass of crisp, white wine?)

I now have the PERFECT pairing!  Instead of mayonnaise (full of  fat and empty calories), use Yoplait Plain Greek Yogurt.  It still has the perfect “tang” and has 0g of fat and is packed with protein!  Your taste buds won’t know the difference and your body will thank you!  YUMMY!
Try it and tell me if you like it!

Mid-Century Modern

May 30th, 2011

Mid-century design fits the “feel” of our house and I am drawn to the simplicity of the furnishings.  We have not remodeled our home, nor will we anytime soon.  I simply settle for sprucing it up a bit.  That doesn’t mean I don’t plan for an amazing facelift or a dream of a new lot with a breathtaking view.

I saw these pictures of Demi and Ashton’s home in Beverly Hills and fell in love.  The open space, vast windows, and amazing pool instantly make me smile!  Can’t you just picture a summer party?

Until I have saved my pennies (dimes and quarters), I will live the dream through others and sip a cocktail sitting in my new patio chairs! Yes, an ode to Mid-Century Modern and a price that is within reach!  Cheers!

Breaking News: Summer Shoe Update

May 29th, 2011
New shoes for a new season…when it arrives! (Check out the shoes that are on their way to my doorstep!)
A kitten heel with a punch of color.  I own these Ivanka Trump heels in black and they are extremely comfortable.  Can’t wait to pair them with jeans or shorts and a neutral top.
(Ivanka Trump ‘Indico’ Pump)
A stacked wedge in the perfect shade for summer.  These will be perfect with cuffed boyfriend jeans or a striped summer dress.
(Jessica Simpson ‘Jungle’ Espadrille Sandal)
Super fun flats with a hippie twist.  Everything 70’s is hot again and so is this shoe!  A great alternative to flip flops!  How great will these look with a maxi dress (if you are over 5’4″ tall) or a long, light weight skirt?
(DV by Dolce Vita ‘Nyle’ Sandal)
Add one new pair of shoes to your closet this season….it is worth it! Let me know what you get!!

(P.S.  Got these 3 pair on sale at the Nordstrom 1/2 Yearly!)

Now That’s a Rock!

May 29th, 2011

Well, isn’t she a lucky girl?  Kim K. received a 20.5 carat sparkler this week from someone.  (Don’t know who he is, but I am sure she does.  Right?)  Opinions are a-plenty on this subject!  Totally over the top.  Superficial!  Greedy.  Is that a “blood diamond”? I am Switzerland on this one.  Seems like a fairly stunning setting and actually doesn’t look ridiculous on her hand. However,  I do have a few words of advice for Miss Kim.

Dear Kim,
Congratulations on your surprise engagement!  All of my best to you.  Your ring is spectacular.  I thought I might offer a little advice as you get accustomed to wearing it.  You will need to continue being the face of Skechers Shape ups, pimp your life out to E!, and host parties for 100’s of people you don’t know poolside in Vegas.  Why, you wonder?  You will forever need a domestic staff.   20.5 carat engagement rings and SOS pads are not friends. Housekeepers will be a necessity.  And if you are so blessed with child, in the near future, diaper blow outs will be a problem.  It is a real nuisance having to clean your setting once it is coated in poop.  (Don’t worry, it won’t be so bad when it is your baby!)  A nanny will be your first line of defense in keeping your ring pristine.

I am sure your financial future is rock solid.  No pun intended.  I would hate for you or any of the Kardashian family to fall on hard times.  Just in case you aren’t able to keep an army of help employed, I have attached a photo of a ring keeper.  A ring keeper is a lovely way to have that “one” place to keep your ring.  So-if you have to wash dishes, change diapers, bathe a baby, mop the floor, pick cheerios off the backseat floor, or any other mindless chore-you will know your “bling” is safe and sound.

Again, my most sincere congratulations!  Can’t wait to see the dress your stylist chooses and all of the fantastic ideas your wedding planner comes up with.
Yours truly,
denise thomas

when it rains..it pours

November 19th, 2009

At least in the Northwest. It has been raining HARD for 3 straight days. I will gladly take our good ‘ole fashion drizzle over this!!

While on the topic of falling water…I would like to discuss showers! Yes, I am in need of one daily! Somehow, it is the first thing that enters my mind to “drop” off the to-do-list when there is no way to get it all done! Today, I choose the shower over working out and I am still mad about it!

The set-up: I stayed up with Aaron last night until 11pm. Me watching DVR recordings of Oprah, while he worked. (I KNOW…tough work but it had to be done!) Staying up late meant I wasn’t getting up to work out at 5:30am. Instead I slept in and snuggled with Will (who crawled into my bed at 4am). Then breakfasts, unloading dishes, clothing children, brushing teeth (my own), and out the door to drop off kid 1. Stop by grocery store in the 20 minutes I have before dropping off kid 2. Ooops, I forgot to eat breakfast. Home to unload groceries and eat. Then I was in my crux….shower or work out. I only had 1 hour before picking up kid 2, so I could only do one. Since the rest of my day consisted of picking up kid 2, then kid 1 and friend early from school (noon release) and being home with 3 boys most of the afternoon, laundry, kitchen, dinner, and meeting at 6:30-it had to be the shower!

Lessons learned: Don’t stay up late with my husband. Don’t sleep in. Work out at 5:30 am. Shower before the boys get up. Have AmazonFresh deliver. Clean the kitchen at night. Teach the boys to do the laundry. Use my slow-cooker. Stop volunteering.

tomorrow is another day. thank goodness!

getting it together

October 23rd, 2009

Sir William James and Sir Henry Vaughn. Their personalities shine through in these pictures.

Life is truly an ebb and flow. During my last posting I certainly was feeling defeated. Usually my boys go through their ‘phases’ separately, so I can manage it better. Unfortunately, they are BOTH in horrible places right now and we will leave it at that! Because today I more hopeful. Even though the rain comes down in steady streams, I am smiling and feeling a bit relieved. Relieved that we seem to be getting it together….a bit. I look forward to spending time as a family this weekend and hope that the moments of joy and laughter outnumber the meltdowns and timeouts. A mother can hope!

purpose driven mothering

October 16th, 2009

I began reading the book…but didn’t finish….A Purpose Driven Life. I love the title. Should there be a book titled Purpose Driven Mothering? I haven’t had many lows in a long while. I am blessed with healthy children, a kind and loving husband, and a fairly easy life. I say easy because I don’t work outside my home, we live comfortably (more than comfortably), and we don’t struggle to meet the basic needs of our family. Nonetheless, I am struggling. I struggle everyday to mother with purpose. I have written about this before and find myself writing about it again.

These little men of mine are true gifts. I cannot put into words my understanding of the task at hand. The task of raising them and loving them. I sometimes miss the days right after they were born. When I could hold them, if I wanted, for hours and hours. I remember just staring at them in amazement and awe. How could this little guy really be…here? These days those moments feel like they were in a different lifetime. (This may also be why some women have more babies. But I digress!) These days I feel like I don’t have any answers. My brain knows that you can’t be a perfect mother, that kids are not perfect, and NO ONE has ALL the answers. I know that intellectually, but my heart does not feel that. I am desperate to do right by them. Although not logical, I take most of their shortcomings as personal failures. Again I know this in my head as crazy; it is my heart that has a hard time believing.

As the season changes here in Seattle, it has turned damp, gray, and bleak. At the moment, that is how I feel. The joyous, boisterous holidays are right around the corner. I know my spirits will lift. I know that in the weeks to come my boys will enter new phases, maybe ones I am better equipped to manage. I know that my life is good and that these boys are true treasures. I know that one day I will look back at THIS time and think about how simple and lovely my troubles were. I know these things in my head….I just need my heart to believe them as well.

Where is June?
