It’s all the rage. Grab a gallon of chalkboard paint and pick a wall. I have to be honest. I love the look, but I am a skeptic. I worry that the idea of the wall is so much better than the reality of a wall you cover with messy chalk. I don’t live in a magazine. I am not an artist nor have I mastered hand lettering……skills that would make a chalkboard wall awesome. I am a bit of a control freak. Disappointment looms.
So, I have to ask. Chalkboard wall. Yes or no? Do you have a chalkboard wall in your home? Is it just how you wanted it? How do handle the messiness? Do you clean it often? Where is it located? I want to be convinced it is a great idea. It is just paint after all.

Hmm, I love this idea! But perhaps not in a living or dining room? I think I would try it out in a bathroom or small space of a kitchen. How fun!
I used to have a chalkboard refrigerator and I LOVED it! I agree it works best in an informal space like a kitchen or eating nook…my kids left cute notes, drew pictures and counted down the days to holidays & events. Also a great spot for a grocery list & easy to wipe clean when you’re sick of the scribbles…go for it!
YES! YES! YES! I just did one for a client but instead of on a wall we did them as her refrigerator doors. Love how they turned out. They are a pop of FUN, everyone in family young and old can get involved and even show their artistic side 🙂 TIC TAX TOE anyone? The chalk dust is the only down fall. If chalk ends up on an another wall or on the floor just wipe it off with a damp towel…do it!
A friend has them on the inside of her cabinet doors! That way you don’t have to see it all the time, but it is a good place to keep notes/lists/doodles.
I love it also, I agree that there is a mess with the dust so I’m also in search of the right place to contain a chalk space. We are remodeling our kitchen and while at the paint store, I also looked at BM Dry Erase paint. He recommended it more than the chalkboard paint. Just a thought.
I did a small chalk wall just off our kitchen (for my new & improved kitchen command center) and love the way it turned out. So much so, that I put a mini-chalk area in the kids’ playroom. Messy? Yes. More than I’d like, actually. But I do like the functionality it provides and the overall look of the black wall. I wish the chalk pens worked on the walls since it seems like they would be cleaner to manage (but they don’t). The chalk pens do work on the ‘chalk contact paper’ though so I’ve had a field day with that; making labels and covering old/unused white boards. You could always try that as a test run? Otherwise. anything under the chalk wall area gets a nice coat of chalk dust, but easy to tend to with a damp cloth. Your boys would get a kick out of it I’m sure – DO IT (& post-pics, of course.)
