THE BEST TEACHER APPRECIATION GIFT

Friday, May 8th, 2020

In case you missed in your social media feed, it is National Teacher Appreciation Week. In usual times, the week is filled with flowers, coffee bars, chocolate, gifts, and lunches. (Always amazing, by the way!) In the midst of COVID-19, all that is impossible. What can you possibly do to make the teachers in your child’s life feel appreciated?

I will argue that you are still able to give the best gift of all. A heartfelt note of thanks. In this case, write the teacher an email. Thank her/him/them for the impact they have your child. Teachers love coffee, but they love hearing how their work impacts children. There is nothing better than to hear how your teaching has ignited passions or helped build self-worth! Your words are important to them, now more than ever.

EASY GIFT IDEA

gift box 2

Here it is:  gift giving season is right around the corner.  I’m constantly challenging myself to give thoughtful gifts, yet not break the bank.  If you go to a ton of parties or have a large circle of friends and family it can get really expensive. You have to get creative-which takes a little extra planning.  I’m really pleased with myself.  I have already found my go-to gift idea of the season.  This delightfully cute, porcelain to-go container from CB2 is only $7.95!  Fill it with goodies and you’re done.  The recipient enjoys the treats and is left with a great serving piece for her home.  Full disclosure: the cookies pictured above are Betty Crocker refrigerator cookies.  We will call that semi-homemade.  {Why yes, they were made in my home!}   I have a brainstormed a list of goodie ideas from store bought to truly homemade below.

A HOLIDAY PALETTE

holiday wrap palette | Where is June?

‘Tis the season and it’s time to wrap! Last year I shared my holiday palette of gift wrap and my admission of being OCD when it comes to wrapping presents.  I love choosing new papers each year and The Container Store has the best gift wrap shop!  Last year my theme was Snowy Cottage Glam and included golden glitter paper.  The palette was amazing but the glitter sucked.  I can’t stand the side-effects of glitter.  One gift and I was covered in glitter, as was my bedroom floor.

This year my theme is Festive Mountain Lodge.  Steering clear of the glitter, I am choosing a more understated, woodsy theme.  I fell in love with navy blue antler wrap and built the rest of the palette around it.  Antlers, birch bark, gray gabardine, and winter plaid papers are exactly what I imagine under the tree at a rustic mountain lodge.  Tie-ons and ribbon will finish the packages.  I kind of love it!

PERSONALIZED MEMORY GAME

Pinhole Press Personalized Memory Game Details | Where is June?

I am just a little bit excited about our Christmas gift for our two year old nephew. Ok, a LOT excited!  You might remember Brecken and his little darling face!  I made him a book for his birthday with the faces and names of our family!  I thought it would be a great way for him to stay connected with his cousins and his aunts and uncles.  San Diego is far too far.

We want him to think of Seattle and the PNW as his second home.  For his Christmas gift, I created a Personalized Memory Game with a little help from Pinhole Press.  The game has 24 cards {12 matching pairs}.  I used pictures from my Instagram account, choosing quintessential Northwest images.  The Space Needle, the Seattle Great Wheel, apples, a ferry boat, Safeco Field, snowy mountains, an island beach, Husky Stadium, the Blue Angels, the Pike Street Market sign, the old Boeing barn, and the Seattle skyline.

I love the robots on the back and it only took a few minutes to create this one-of-a-kind gift.  The game can grow with him.  Starting out with a smaller amount of matches to find and building up to all 24 cards.  My boys are looking forward to playing with him.

The game comes packaged in a darling box.  Perfect for a game shelf or a tray so it is easy to grab and play.

Pinhole Press is pretty fantastic.  I also love: the Ice Cream Social Gift Box & the Magnetic Weekly Notepad

A BOOK OF NAMES AND FACES

a book of names | Where is June?

Look at that face?  How could you not love him?!  Meet my adorable nephew, Brecken.  This darling boy just turned two.  He adores his big boy cousins, but he lives far from us.  {Too far, for our liking!}  Knowing that he is at the age where “reading books” is at an all time high, I made him a book for his birthday to help him remember all of his family in Washington.

Pinhole Press made it easy to make this special gift.  Their Mini Book of Names and Faces is beautiful and sturdy!  I was impressed by the quality of the pictures.  The colors were vibrant and even pictures I pulled from my sister-in-law’s Facebook page turned out perfect.  Each page pairs a vibrant color and name with a picture.  Excellent for toddlers to read with a parent or all on their own.  Word has it, the book was a huge hit!  Wouldn’t it make a great gift for expectant mothers as a shower gift?

PS:  I remember when I sent Big W to daycare at the tiny age of 8 weeks!  We sent a picture of our family in case he was sad. {Leaving him that first day, is still fairly traumatic for me to think about.} This book would be so fantastic to give any caregiver to comfort little ones.

A HOLIDAY PALETTE

palette title

Every holiday season, I pick a few new papers and a theme for wrapping.  I don’t like wrapping in last year’s paper and love finding a new palette each year.  Ok, YES, choosing a paper theme squarely lands me in the “I’m a control freak” category, and I totally own it.  I used to run around to store after store looking for worthy paper.  Somehow I was always disappointed.  That is until I walked through the doors of The Container Store.  I had been picked up and set down in wrapping paper heaven!  Seriously, it is that good.

I am calling my theme for the year Snowy Cottage Glam.  The plaid, glitter and two woodland papers are an ode to a glamorous snowy Christmas deep in woods.  What do you think?  I also picked up a roll of black paper and some chalkboard markers.  I plan to make some personalized paper for a few smaller gifts.  {I will post about this idea next week!}  A few rolls of ribbon {this, this, and this} and gift tags and Team Thomas is ready to wrap!

Oh my goodness, there are so many I could create endless palettes for the season.  Which papers are your favorite?!

Now, if only I can get my act together and not wait until December 23rd to wrap my gifts!!  #bemerryandbright

PUTTY CREATURES

putty creatures

Little Man received Putty Creatures as a gift during the holiday season and it was instantly kid approved!  A small tin of Thinking Putty {made with silicone-based inert non-toxic synthetic rubbber} can make any creature imaginable!  The eyeballs were his favorite!  Each tin comes with one set.  Make your creature, push in some eyeballs, and call it awesome.  When you are done creating- simply squish the putty back into the tin and put the lid on it until next time.

I loved that it was a gift he wanted to play with right away.  It involved no screens, yet he was engaged and having fun.  I think I am going to order a few of these and keep them on hand for birthday gifts.  We are always looking for a unique present to take along to friends’ parties without breaking the bank.  This is it.  Putty Creatures, a pack of gum, and some candy in a clear goodie bag.  Done and done.

CANVAS POP {ART}

canvas pop

I use my phone as my point and shoot camera almost daily.  This year I fell in love with Instagram and its square art form.  While looking for a unique gift for an exchange during the holidays (2012), I came across Canvas Pop.  I may have a new addiction!

Turn your Instagram images into a 12″ x 12″ piece of art!  Wrapped canvas, amazing colors and all for $39.95!  I was so impressed by the quality of the work and the image looked fantastic.  It was hard to give it away.

Hanging alone or in a grouping- these little beauties are worth their weight in gold!  Check out the options on their website.
